Oscar Collazo was supposed to spend this week defending his unified minimumweight titles. Instead, he's leaving the division entirely.
What started as a simple opponent swap has turned into something far stranger. Joey Canoy was pulled from Saturday's card after visa issues kept him from entering the United States. A proposed Mexican replacement, Luis Castillo, ran into the same problem. By the time Neider Valdez Aguilar agreed to step in, the fight had outgrown its original shape completely.
Valdez isn't ranked in the WBA or WBO's official top 15, so neither sanctioning body would approve him for a true title shot at 105 pounds. Rather than scrap the card and the paydays of everyone on it, the bout was restructured as a flyweight catchweight fight at 112 pounds, two full divisions above where Collazo has spent his entire championship reign. It's his first fight outside minimumweight since his third professional bout back in 2021.
The WBO attached its International flyweight belt to the bout, a secondary title rather than a genuine world championship. The WBA didn't manage even that. Both fighters comfortably made the 112-pound limit at Friday's weigh-in, with Collazo coming in at 110.5 and Valdez at 111.25.
What's actually at stake Saturday, then, isn't a unified title reign. It's an unbeaten record and a champion's reputation against a heavier opponent in unfamiliar territory. Fighters who campaign at the lowest weights don't always carry their power or chin up in weight smoothly, and Collazo hasn't tested that in five years. Valdez, by contrast, is far more comfortable at this size than Collazo is.
Collazo remains the betting favorite and the better fighter on paper. But Saturday's main event in Oceanside has quietly become less about defending a championship and more about whether the best 105-pound fighter in the world can still look like himself two weight classes north.
