EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers are gearing up for a critical Thursday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Prime Video. It’s a quick turnaround for the Chargers, who are coming off a tough home loss to the Indianapolis Colts, 38-24. With the team at 4-3, their path forward will require a major reset, especially as injuries continue to mount.

The Chargers' struggles on both sides of the ball in recent weeks have been clear. They’ve lost three out of their last four games, and things don’t get any easier as they prepare for the Vikings, who are coming off a tough loss of their own to the Philadelphia Eagles, 28-22.

Injury Updates and Offensive Line Boost

Injury concerns have plagued the Chargers throughout the season, and Week 8 is no different. However, there’s some good news on the horizon, especially for the offensive line.

Jim Harbaugh confirmed that Joe Alt will be back in the lineup for Thursday night’s game. After dealing with injuries earlier in the season, Alt’s return is a much-needed boost for a line that has struggled to protect quarterback Justin Herbert and establish the run game.

Harbaugh had high praise for Alt’s determination, noting, "He’s doing anything and everything he can to play." This determination has been evident as Alt is expected to practice today, alongside Trey Pipkins, who’s also on track to return. Both are considered game-time decisions, but their presence on the field should help solidify the Chargers’ offensive front.

On the downside, the Chargers' running back room has been decimated by injuries. Hassan Haskins has already been ruled out for Thursday, with Omarion Hampton out for a few more weeks and Najee Harris out for the season, the Chargers have a major problem to solve at the running back position.

In response, the Chargers have signed Trayveon Williams to the practice squad, with Kimani Vidal and Nyheim Hines likely stepping into the starting roles against Minnesota. It’s a tough break for a team that came into the season with high hopes for its running back depth.

Defensive Preparations: Slowing Down Justin Jefferson

One of the biggest challenges for the Chargers will be slowing down Justin Jefferson, the star wide receiver for the Vikings. Harbaugh recognizes the immense threat Jefferson poses, calling him a "great player and competitor with an elite skill set."

Chargers cornerbacks will need to step up in a big way to contain Jefferson, who has been one of the most dominant playmakers in the league. The Chargers will lean on their defensive line to pressure Minnesota's QB, Carson Wentz, who is expected to start after being named the Vikings' starting quarterback for the week.

Harbaugh’s defense will also focus on the veteran leadership of Harrison Smith, the Vikings’ safety who has been a key part of Minnesota’s defensive success for over a decade. Harbaugh described Smith as "a very smart player" and acknowledged the challenge of facing a player who has played at such a high level for 14 years.

Khalil Mack’s Increased Role

With the Chargers continuing to battle through injuries, the defense will need to rely on veteran pass-rusher Khalil Mack. After playing just 12 snaps against the Colts, Mack is expected to see a much bigger role this Thursday, particularly in passing situations. The Chargers' defense will be under pressure to generate consistent pressure on Wentz while keeping Jefferson in check.

Oronde Gadsden II: A Rising Star

In a season that has been filled with ups and downs, one of the bright spots has been Oronde Gadsden II, the rookie tight end out of Syracuse. Gadsden has made waves with his talent and work ethic, which Harbaugh recognized early in training camp.

“I just go back to training camp when we could see the talent...the mindset, how driven he was—that showed up when he got here,” said Harbaugh.

Gadsden’s performance has been nothing short of impressive, including a breakout game against the Colts where he racked up 164 receiving yards on seven catches and caught a 53-yard pass from Justin Herbert. As the season progresses, Gadsden’s ability to provide a reliable target alongside Keenan Allen could be a crucial factor for the Chargers' offense.

With the season hanging in the balance, the Chargers have no time to waste. The team needs to correct their mistakes from the Colts' loss quickly and find answers on both sides of the ball. With injuries still lingering, particularly in the backfield, the Chargers will lean heavily on their depth at wide receiver and their quarterback, Herbert, to carry them through.

The Minnesota Vikings, while not without their struggles, will present a formidable challenge. The Chargers’ defense will need to buckle down and put together a game plan to contain Wentz and Jefferson, while the offense must find ways to exploit Minnesota’s defensive weaknesses.

It’s a pivotal game for the Chargers, who will need to rally together to avoid letting their promising start to the season slip away. If they can find some rhythm in a short week, the Chargers can start to right the ship and build some momentum heading into the heart of the season.

The Thursday Night Football showdown kicks off at 5:15 p.m. PT on Amazon Prime Video.
