LA Galaxy to honor Cobi Jones with statue in Legends Plaza

CARSON, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy, fresh off their 2024 MLS Cup victory, announced Tuesday that club legend Cobi Jones will be immortalized with a statue at Dignity Health Sports Park's Legends Plaza. 

The statue, set to be unveiled in 2026, will commemorate Jones’ unparalleled contributions to the Galaxy, Major League Soccer, and U.S. soccer as the nation prepares to host the FIFA World Cup that same year.

“I am truly humbled by this incredible honor,” Jones said. “This moment is more about the unwavering support I’ve had from my family, teammates, coaches, staff, and, most importantly, the fans. I hope this statue serves as a reminder to future generations that with hard work, dedication, and a love for the game, anything is possible.”

Jones, a Los Angeles native, was the Galaxy’s cornerstone during the club’s early years, playing 12 MLS seasons (1996-2007) and setting club records for games played (306), goals (70), and assists (91). He scored the first goal in Galaxy history and helped the team secure two MLS Cups (2002, 2005), two Supporters’ Shields (1998, 2002), two U.S. Open Cups (2001, 2005), and a CONCACAF Champions’ Cup (2000). A four-time MLS All-Star and 1998 MLS Best XI honoree, Jones also made an indelible mark on the U.S. Men’s National Team, earning a record 165 appearances, competing in three World Cups, and winning the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

“Being immortalized with a statue is the highest honor a club can bestow upon a player,” said Dan Beckerman, President and CEO of AEG, the Galaxy’s parent company. “Cobi is an exceptional leader who transcended the sport and has been extraordinary in his service to the club, his community, and the country. This statue will stand as a testament to his unmatched talent and relentless dedication.”

The statue will join those of David Beckham and Landon Donovan in Legends Plaza, a central hub for fans on game days. Details for the unveiling ceremony will be announced closer to the event.

Jones, who began his soccer journey as a youth player in Los Angeles before starring at UCLA and winning an NCAA Championship in 1990, has remained deeply connected to the community. A champion for diversity and equity in sports, he supports the LA Galaxy Community Foundation and works to expand opportunities for underserved youth.

Galaxy President Tom Braun highlighted Jones’ significance to the club. “His role in establishing the LA Galaxy as the league’s most iconic and winningest club has made his name synonymous with our sport and our team. We can’t wait to continue celebrating his leadership.”

Jones was surprised with news of the honor at a January 7 LA Galaxy All-Staff meeting, surrounded by family and colleagues. Reflecting on the recognition, he emphasized the collective effort behind his achievements. “This dedication is a sign of the unwavering support I’ve had from the entire LA Galaxy community,” he said.

With this statue, the Galaxy solidify Jones’ place among the sport’s greatest icons, ensuring his legacy inspires fans and players for generations to come.
