Anaheim Ducks C (91) Leo Carlsson battles for the puck against the Calgary Flame on January 7, 2025 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.

The Ducks came back to tie twice, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the win against the Tampa Bay Lightning — a team they beat 4-1 two weeks ago — on Thursday night.

Anaheim lost in a shootout, 4-3, despite outshooting Tampa Bay 37 to 35. The team was scoreless on the power play once again, and holds a league second-worst power play conversion percentage with 12.9%.

The Ducks failed to score in the shootout period — attempts from the Ducks’ Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish and Troy Terry came up short.

Ducks goalie Lukas Dostal started the game in net for the team and saved 32-of-35 shots. In the shootout, he allowed a goal from Tampa Bay winger Jake Guentzel on the team’s first attempt, but saved the next two attempts.

Terry — playing in his first game back after taking time off for the birth of his child — scored six minutes into the game to put the Ducks up 1-0.

Anthony Cirelli scored eight minutes later to tie the game, and Guentzel also scored on a Lightning power play early in the second period to put his team up 2-1.

Carlsson tied the score with a wrist shot midway through the period, assisted by McTavish.

Brayden Point scored for Tampa Bay to put the Lightning ahead once again, 3-2.

The Ducks tied the score with a tip from Fabbri deflecting off of a shot from defenseman Jacob Trouba ten minutes into the third period, which ended up being the last goal in regulation.

After a scoreless overtime period, where Cutter Gauthier flashed some speed but the team came up empty, the Ducks ultimately lost in overtime.

The shootout loss moved their overall season record to 18-22-5 on the season, good for sixth place in the Pacific Division. They’re also 1-3-1 on the road trip overall, including being shut out twice.

Next, the Ducks will finish out their road trip against the Florida Panthers on Saturday at 3 p.m. — before returning to Anaheim for a three-game homestand beginning on Tuesday.
