Chris Richards’ rise to the top of U.S. Soccer in 2025 was steady, authoritative, and impossible to overlook. On Wednesday, that year-long body of work was formally recognized when Richards was named the 2025 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year, becoming the latest defender to claim an award more commonly associated with attackers.

For Richards, the honor reflects a year in which he emerged as a central figure for both club and country. At just 25, the Birmingham, Alabama native delivered the most complete season of his career, pairing consistency with moments that directly shaped results.

With the U.S. men’s national team, Richards was ever-present. He featured in 12 matches during the calendar year, starting 11 of them and logging over 1,000 minutes. Under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, Richards became the backbone of the American back line, trusted for his composure, positioning, and leadership. That trust was most evident during the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, where Richards started every match on the U.S. run to the final.

He did more than defend. Richards scored twice during the tournament, including a crucial header in the final against Mexico, and earned a spot on the Gold Cup Best XI. For a center back, the combination of defensive reliability and timely goals set him apart in a crowded player pool.

His club form mirrored that impact. Richards cemented himself as a regular starter for Crystal Palace, making over 30 appearances across competitions during the 2024-25 season. His calm presence in central defense played a key role in one of the most successful campaigns in the club’s long history.

Palace lifted two domestic trophies in 2025, beginning with a landmark FA Cup victory over Manchester City that delivered the first FA Cup title in the club’s history. Richards went the full 90 minutes in the final, anchoring a disciplined defensive performance. Months later, Palace added the Community Shield after defeating Liverpool on penalties, with Richards once again playing every minute.

The award itself places Richards in rare company. He is the second consecutive defender to win U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year, following Antonee Robinson in 2024, marking the first time since the mid-1990s that defenders have claimed the honor in back-to-back years. Richards also stood out in a strong voting field, finishing well ahead of fellow nominees Malik Tillman, Alex Freeman, Max Arfsten, and Matt Freese.

Richards learned of the award in unexpected fashion, during what he believed was a routine media appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. The moment underscored the growing visibility of soccer in the United States, something Richards himself acknowledged while reflecting on the recognition.

More than an individual achievement, the award signals where the U.S. program is heading. With the 2026 World Cup approaching on home soil, Richards has positioned himself as a leader for the next phase of the national team. His 2025 was defined by reliability, growth, and decisive performances when they mattered most.

Now, the challenge is carrying that standard forward.
