LOS ANGELES -- Lakers legend and business icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson has been named an Official Community Ambassador for the Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee, joining an influential group that will help prepare the city to host one of the most anticipated sporting events in history.

The announcement was made Thursday by the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission (LASEC), which leads the Host Committee’s efforts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. L.A. will play a major role during the tournament, hosting the opening U.S. Men’s National Team match at SoFi Stadium, making it the first World Cup game on home soil since 1994.

Johnson, who has called L.A. home for over 40 years, brings his community impact and business savvy to the committee.

“I’m honored to serve as an Official Community Ambassador for the Los Angeles World Cup 2026,” Johnson said. “I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over four decades and have seen how the power of sports can inspire, uplift, and unite people from all walks of life. I’m committed to supporting the Host Committee’s efforts to leave a lasting legacy throughout the tournament, ensuring Los Angeles shines on the world stage.”

After a Hall of Fame basketball career that included five NBA championships and three MVPs with the Lakers and an Olympic gold medal, Johnson transitioned into a powerhouse business figure as Chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises.

His company invests in underserved communities and holds ownership stakes in the L.A. Dodgers, L.A. Sparks, LAFC, Team Liquid, Washington Spirit, and the NFL’s Washington Commanders.

Known for his deep L.A. roots and commitment to social impact, Johnson will help promote inclusion and unity while ensuring the World Cup leaves a lasting legacy beyond the games.

“Magic’s legacy of excellence, both on the court and in the community, makes him a powerful voice for what this tournament represents,” said Kathryn Schloessman, President & CEO of LASEC and CEO of the Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee. “We’re thrilled to welcome him as part of our team as we work to deliver a World Cup experience that reflects the spirit and diversity of Los Angeles.”

Johnson joins a group of high-profile ambassadors representing the city’s vibrant culture and passion for sports, including Community Chairman Snoop Dogg and fellow Official Community Ambassadors Cobi Jones and Eva Longoria. Together, they’ll engage Angelenos ahead of the tournament and help showcase L.A. as a global hub of sport, culture, and community.

The FIFA World Cup 26 will be the largest World Cup in history, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
