A first-half lead dissolved due to familiar defensive breakdowns as the LA Galaxy fell 2-1 to a playoff-chasing FC Dallas Saturday afternoon.

Galaxy head coach head coach Greg Vanney attributed the loss to a combination of assignment and mentality lapses.

The Galaxy (5-18-9) took an early lead just four minutes into the match when Diego Fagundez fired home from outside the box, a goal that brought his career totals to 79 goals and 79 assists.

The early advantage, however, was erased before halftime.

Dallas equalized in the 36th minute, capitalizing on a crossed ball and a lost mark at the back post.

The winner came just before the break from Patrickson Delgado, who was given plenty of time and space to unleash a long-range shot.

Vanney pinpointed the second goal as unacceptable.

“Zanka needs to release because there's nothing for him to keep dropping back for,” Vanney explained. “He needs to release quicker and harder and not allow Delgado to get off a clean shot… We were passive, and we allow – yeah, he hits a great shot. So kudos to him, but he shouldn't have that time and space.”

The match also featured Joseph Paintsil captaining the Galaxy for the first time.

Despite the result, Vanney praised Fagundez's value during a difficult season, calling him “the consummate team guy” and “one of our most important players for the whole season.”

Fagundez echoed the frustration, stating, “I don't know if I even have answers for that. Right now, I think we're coming in high and scoring first, and before half them scoring two goals is just not what we want.”

The Galaxy will seek a quick turnaround when they host a rematch against FC Dallas at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, October 11.
