EL SEGUNDO, Calif.— The Los Angeles Lakers opened Media Day on Monday with a mix of familiar faces and fresh optimism, underscoring the franchise’s lofty expectations heading into the 2025-26 season.

LeBron James, beginning his 23rd NBA campaign, reflected on the unique opportunity of playing alongside his son Bronny last year while clarifying that he doesn’t anticipate waiting for his younger son Bryce to reach the NBA. James said he is focused on the present and embracing the chance to help guide a roster that is once again built to compete for a championship.

Luka Dončić, the centerpiece of the Lakers’ long-term plans after signing a lucrative offseason extension, stood at the center of attention. The All-Star guard is expected to shoulder much of the team’s offensive load and form a dynamic partnership with James as the Lakers chase their first title since 2020. Dončić’s presence provided a glimpse into both the Lakers’ present and future, signaling a transition of power as James edges closer to the twilight of his career.

Austin Reaves also drew attention, acknowledging the difficulty of turning down a four-year contract extension worth nearly $90 million this summer. Despite that decision, he reaffirmed his commitment to the Lakers and his confidence in taking another step forward this season. Head coach JJ Redick praised Reaves’ offseason work, describing him as one of the most consistent players in the gym.

The Lakers also introduced new additions, including forward Anton Watson and guard Nate Williams, who signed contracts ahead of training camp, along with guard Nick Smith Jr. on a two-way deal. These moves were designed to bolster depth behind the team’s stars, giving Redick more flexibility as he enters his second season at the helm.

Redick, who recently signed a contract extension himself, expressed confidence in the team’s balance of talent and experience. He highlighted center DeAndre Ayton as a natural fit alongside Dončić in the pick-and-roll, pointing to his size, hands, and mobility as qualities that could open up new dimensions in the Lakers’ offense.

The mix of star power, rising talent and organizational stability has fueled a sense of optimism around the franchise. With Media Day setting the tone, the Lakers emphasized their commitment to contending for another championship.

The season opener may still be weeks away, but the Lakers left no doubt that expectations are as high as ever in Los Angeles.
