The Aces completed the weekend trifecta for local sports, as they cruised to an 80-66 win over the Chicago Sky on Sunday at T-Mobile Arena.
Saturday, it was UNLV football defeating UCLA, 30-23, to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
Sunday morning, it was the Raiders with a 20-13 road win at New England to open the Pete Carroll era.
For the Aces, it seemed like business as usual lately, as they notched their 14th straight win behind yet another 30-point game from reigning MVP A'ja Wilson, who finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds to push Las Vegas into a second-place tie with the Atlanta Dream - both at 28-14.
It was Wilson's 13th game with 30+ points, a new single-season WNBA record.
Jackie Young finished with 20 points and nine assists, while Chelsea Gray had 13 points.
Young has scored in double figures in 36 of the 42 games played and in all but one during the Aces winning streak.
Las Vegas led wire-to-wire against the injury-plagued Sky, who are in 12th place under first-year coach and former Aces assistant Tyler Marsh.
During the Aces' 14-game run, they lead the WNBA with 87.4 points on the league's second-best 46.9% shooting percentage. At the other end, the Aces are holding teams to 77.4 points per game, fourth-lowest in the WNBA during that span.
Here are three takeaways from the game:
MIVP
The campaign for Wilson to win her fourth MVP award continued before the game when coach Becky Hammon walked into her pregame press conference donning a pink wig, akin to the one the three-time MVP wore on media day. She also wore a hoodie with "MIVP" on the front, the Roman numeral "IV" implying a 4th MVP for Wilson.
Wilson was as high as a 100/1 long shot to win the MVP award before the Aces began their hot streak that saw them go from ninth place to second, and is now an overwhelming favorite (-400) over Minnesota's Napheesa Collier (+300), per the Westgate Superbook.
During the Aces' 14-14 start to the season, Wilson was averaging 21.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Since then, she's tallying 27.4 points and 12.0 rebounds per contest.
"It's dominant," Hammon said. "She's dominant on both ends, and it's really special to have a front row seat to watch her great greatness."
NO-LYSSA
After falling hard to the court against Minnesota on Thursday, NaLyssa Smith missed Sunday's game against the Sky while in concussion protocol. It was the first time Smith, who worked herself into the starting lineup, missed a game since joining the Aces before the deadline.
Hammon refused to go into details about Smith's status, but did say she was not happy that she was not in the lineup.
"I'm irritated that she's not playing, I'll put it that way, let's move on," Hammon said.
REESE OUT
After serving her first-half suspension for comments the organization deemed detrimental to the team, Sky star Angel Reese ended up sitting the entire game, with the team citing a back injury. Reese took part in shootaround before the game and appeared fine, but wore a back brace over her powder blue warm-up jacket.
The second-year power forward apologized after facing backlash for hurtful comments toward her teammates, but the franchise released a statement on Friday announcing disciplinary action for her words.
"The Chicago Sky values the safety, respect, and well being of every player," the statement read. "We are committed to accountability so our players can stay focused on playing basketball. Because of statements detrimental to the team made by Angel Reese during league-mandated media, she will not play in the first half of the game on September 7 against the Las Vegas Aces. This matter has been handled and resolved internally, and we are moving forward as a team."
Chicago plays again in Las Vegas on Tuesday. It hasn't been announced if Reese will play. Last year, Reese used her social media platform to announce she would sit out the final six games of the 2024 season due to a wrist injury.
