SAO PAULO — Jim Harbaugh has coached in a Super Bowl and won a college football national championship, but on Friday night he found himself doing something new. As he walked into Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, he pulled out his phone to record the atmosphere, repeating the date — September 5 — as if he knew this was a night he and his team would remember forever.

The Los Angeles Chargers gave Harbaugh something he won't soon forget, stunning the Kansas City Chiefs 27-21 before a packed international crowd. It was the Chargers’ first win over their AFC West rivals in nearly four years, snapping a seven-game losing streak in the series.

Justin Herbert was at the center of it all, throwing for 318 yards and three touchdowns while using his legs to make the game’s defining play. With under two minutes left and the Chargers clinging to a six-point lead, Herbert scrambled on third down and slid after picking up the first down, raising the ball in triumph as Chargers fans erupted.

“It was monumental,” Harbaugh said. “This will go down in some Charger lore. The way Justin played tonight, it was pinpoint accuracy and sheer will.”

Herbert spread the ball around with veteran precision. Keenan Allen caught seven passes for 68 yards and a touchdown, while second-year receiver Quentin Johnston emerged as a breakout star with five receptions for 79 yards and two scores. Cameron Dicker added two field goals as Los Angeles controlled the tempo from the start, leading 13-6 at halftime.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs looked poised for another late rally, but uncharacteristic mistakes haunted them throughout the night. Mahomes threw for 258 yards and ran for an 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter, but Kansas City missed both an extra point and a two-point conversion in crucial moments. Travis Kelce caught a 37-yard touchdown to pull the Chiefs close, but a heated exchange with Chargers tackle Teair Tart — who was flagged for a personal foul after striking Kelce in the face — disrupted Kansas City’s momentum.

Harrison Butker drilled a 59-yard field goal before halftime, but the Chiefs could not finish drives in the red zone. Andy Reid lamented his team’s slow start, saying, “We’ve got to make sure we start faster. We weren’t emotionally ready the way we should have been.”

For the Chargers, it was the kind of signature win Harbaugh was hired to deliver. After years of frustration against the Chiefs, Los Angeles finally found its breakthrough on one of the sport’s biggest stages. The international setting only added to the spectacle, with thousands of Brazilian fans creating a raucous scene and Colombian star Karol G performing at halftime.

As Herbert knelt to run out the clock, Harbaugh once again looked around to capture the scene. For a coach who has seen just about everything, the start of this NFL season may have been of his most memorable moments of all.
