LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers have promoted top catching prospect Dalton Rushing, marking a significant step in the 24-year-old's career as they designate catcher Austin Barnes for assignment.
Barnes, 35, was informed of the roster change following the Tuesday night game against the Athletics. This season, he has been batting .214 with two RBIs and no home runs. Since making his debut in 2015, Barnes has played in 612 games for the Dodgers.

There are several reasons why Rushing might currently be a better fit than Austin Barnes. One key factor is Rushing's batting, as Barnes has struggled offensively in recent seasons, frequently posting a batting average below .200.
In contrast, Rushing offers legitimate offensive potential. His advanced plate discipline reflects his ability to read pitches effectively, and he has solid on-base skills that allow him to consistently get on base. Additionally, as a left-handed hitter, he adds significant value to the righty-heavy Dodgers lineup, particularly with his notable power at the plate.
Rushing has participated in 31 games this season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he has a batting average of .308, an on-base percentage of .424, and a slugging percentage of .514, including five home runs and 21 walks. During his time in the minors, Rushing is batting .277 with 54 home runs and 185 RBI with OPS of .931.
Barnes is nearing the end of his career as he has been the backup through his time with the Dodgers. Rushing, on the other hand, represents the new wave of talent for the Dodgers. By providing him with playing time now, the team can accelerate his development, which could lead to a strong long-term catching duo alongside Will Smith. This approach may also position Rushing as Smith's eventual successor, ensuring continuity for the team in the years ahead.
Rushing can contribute dynamically by serving as a designated hitter or pinch-hitter from the left side of the plate. His presence adds a level of offensive versatility that Barnes does not provide. This versatility becomes especially valuable during times of injury or slumps within the lineup, as having a capable bat like Rushing’s gives Dave Roberts a wider array of strategic options during games.
