DETROIT -- The Padres get shut out 6-0 and lose the series against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday morning.

San Diego’s offense was asleep against starting pitcher Reese Olson, combining for seven strikeouts and only two hits. Both hits came from second baseman Jose Iglesias (.289 BA, .723 OPS).

Reese attacked the Friars, controlling the strike zone and getting ahead early. Reese was mixing speeds throughout his outing and set up his changeup well with his slider and four-seam. He held the top four of the Padres lineup to a forgettable 0/12 day.

Starting pitcher Kyle Hart (2-2, 6.00 ERA) had a solid outing on the mound for San Diego. The Tigers got to him early in the first with a home run from second baseman Gleyber Torres, but Hart found his groove and cruised through three straight innings.

Detroit finally got to him again in the fifth, as designated hitter Justyn-Henry Malloy crushed a slider middle-in to extend the lead to 2-0 and end Hart’s day. Hart finished his day allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts in 4 ⅓ innings pitched.

San Diego’s bullpen couldn’t keep the game within reach, as relievers Adrian Morejon (1-0, 2.38 ERA) and Yuki Matsui (0-1, 3.27 ERA) combined for four runs allowed and five hits in two innings pitched.

The Friars lose the rubber match in Detroit (16-10) and are now 17-8, still tied with the New York Mets for the best record in baseball.

The Padres look to bounce back as they travel home to host the Tampa Bay Rays (9-14) on Friday at 6:40 p.m at Petco Park.
