DETROIT -- Base runners were at a premium all day as Nick Pivetta had another strong outing, making an early two-run home run by Elias Díaz stand up for the San Diego Padres beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Tuesday at Comerica Park.
The Padres (17-7) starter went seven innings for the third time this year to earn his fourth win of the season, keeping the Tigers (14-10) off balance all afternoon by relying on his fast ball while mixing in a sweeper and curveball.
Pivetta held Deroit to two hits while fanning six and walking two as he allowed only man to reach second, which Gleyber Torres took by stealing it after walking in the first on a Riley Green swinging strikeout. It was the third time this season he's had a scoreless outing.
All told, Jason Adam allow one hit in the eighth and Robert Suarez set the Tigers down in order with one strikeout for his 10th save.
San Diego didn't get much against Tigers starter Jack Flaherty either. Xander Bogaerts led off the second with a single, and Díaz turned on a 2-2 knuckle curve to launch his first home run of the season just over the leaping attempt at the wall by left fielder Riley Greene.
Flaherty finished with five hits allowed, two (earned) runs, nine strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work and didn't allow a Padre to get multiple hits against him. Fernando Tatis Jr. kept his hitting streak alive by singling in the eighth inning and had also reached base on an error by Trey Sweeney in the third.
The Padres close out the series sendin Kyle Hart (2-1, 6.48 ERA) to the hill against Reese Olson (2-1, 4.50 ERA) to close out the six-game road swing at 10:10 a.m. on Wednesday at Comerica Park.
