ORLANDO — The Lakers skid continued in Orlando behind a lackluster second half from Los Angeles, falling to the Magic 118-106 on Monday evening in their third straight loss.
L.A. is now 15-19 on the road this season, being the only team within the top six in the Western Conference to have a record under .500 away from home. They remain the fourth seed with a 43-28 record, losing their fifth straight road game.
The Lakers' defensive struggles mirrored their performance in Saturday’s loss to Chicago, as communication lapses and a lack of cohesion once again proved costly. Just as the Bulls' young stars exposed a slow L.A. defense, Orlando’s rising talents followed suit. Franz Wagner hurt the Lakers with 32 points and nine assists, while Paolo Banchero added 30 points and seven rebounds, combining for 62.
Despite the defensive woes, the Lakers started strong in front of a packed crowd at Kia Center. They shot efficiently inside the arc, converting eight of their first 14 attempts, and took a 30-26 lead after the opening quarter. Luka Dončić set the tone early, dropping 11 points in the first and finishing the half with 21, helping L.A. maintain a four-point edge at the break.
But the second half told a different story. Orlando flipped the script in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 34-18 and seizing control of the game. L.A. never found its rhythm again, unable to recover from the Magic’s surge.
"We look tired, and I don't know what contributes to that. That happens periodically throughout a season," head coach JJ Redick said. "We weren't able to sustain the level of intensity we started the game with, and I thought our guys started really well."
Dončić racked up another 30-point game, finishing with 32 points (seven assists, seven rebounds) in 38 minutes. He struggled to find a consistent rhythm, shooting just eight of 23 (34.7%). This is the eighth game in March in which Dončić has scored over 30 points, averaging 31.1 points (8.9 assists, 8.8 rebounds) this month.
In his second game back from a seven-game absence, LeBron James had 24 points, seven assists, and six rebounds in 37 minutes. Austin Reaves added 18 points.
The Lakers road trip continues, and their woes on the road matter even more with the season near its end with 11 games left, seven of which will be on the road.
"I think we just got to look back at the way we played at that 8-game winning streak," Dončić said. "I think we just got a little bit satisfied; we can't afford that right now."
Next Game
The Lakers travel to Indiana next in the second contest of a four-game road trip. The Pacers are currently on a five-game win streak and have won seven of their last eight games.
All-Time Record Between the Two
This was the 72nd game between the two franchises, with the Lakers winning 46 of those contests. Their first matchup was back in 1989 when James Worthy had 32 points in L.A.’s 108-103 loss to Orlando.
