When Lewis Hamilton’s blockbuster move to Ferrari came out in early 2024, the driver market went completely haywire. With this decision being made, eight of the ten Formula One teams are welcoming new faces into their garage for the 2025 season. From Carlos Sainz packing his bags and moving to Williams, to Liam Lawson stepping up into one of the most coveted seats at Red Bull racing, fans cannot wait for preseason testing to arrive. But the one move that stands above all the rest, is the addition of Andrea Kimi Antonelli into the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team.
If you have not followed Formula One or don’t know much about Antonelli I’ll give you some facts about him that will surely blow your mind. Antonelli was born on August 25, 2006 in Bologna, Italy, making him just eighteen years old. Antonelli is the third youngest driver to ever step foot into the cockpit of a Formula One car. The only two drivers who were younger than Antonelli were Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen. Remember Verstappen since he is going to be very important when we talk about why Antonelli was selected to take over Lewis Hamilton’s seat. Just over a week ago Antonelli officially got his driver's license.
This means that before he was ever legally allowed to drive on the road, he was racing at speeds over 200 mph in Formula Two. And the best bit is that he was not just surviving in Formula Two, but he was thriving. Antonelli won two races in Formula Two which shows just how much talent the young Italian driver possesses. Now that we know a little bit about Antonelli, let's dive into his journey to Formula One and see why he was chosen to pair up with George Russel.
DRIVING EXPERIENCE
From the very beginning Antonelli showcased talent right away. Just like every Formula One driver Antonelli began his racing career in karting when he was just seven years old. After dominating the karting scene which included back to back OK European Championships, Antonelli was promoted to junior formulae.
He signed with Prema and he proved why he is the most hyped driver in modern day racing. He won the Italian F4 Championship in 2022, he participated in the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games where he won a gold medal for his home country Italy, and he won the Formula Regional European Championship in 2023 just to name a few accomplishments.
With all of these awards, Antonelli had an extremely impressive resume which convinced Mercedes to have him bypass Formula Three and go straight to Formula Two in 2024. Although everyone believed that Antonelli was being rushed up the ladder of motor racing, Antonelli quickly proved everyone wrong. In his rookie season Antonelli achieved two podiums which were both race wins for the Italian driver. His first race win occured at the action packed sprint race in Silverstone. With the conditions being cold and rainy the drivers had hardly any grip on the race track.
There were yellow flags waving left and right as drivers spun off the track repeatedly but Antonelli remained calm and cruised to the race win. Then Antonelli won a second time in Budapest but this time it was a feature race win. Antonelli started P7 on the grid and went on to have a masterclass of a drive. He was smart, aggressive, and fast throughout the entire race as he steam rolled through the field and found himself at the top step of the podium. This race truly showed the heart and grit that he possesses out on track.
WHY KIMI ANTONELLI?
When Lewis Hamilton left Mercedes everyone knew that Toto Wolff was not looking to find someone who can replace Hamilton, but someone who can take over his seat. No matter who Wolff decided to hire, nobody was going to replace arguably one of if not the greatest Formula One driver to ever step foot on track. So with that in mind Wolff was looking for someone who can grow with the team and flourish for the next upcoming seasons.
A popular idea was that Mercedes would sign Carlos Sainz who had an incredible last season and was a skilled driver. It seemed only right that Mercedes would just switch with Ferrari and take Sainz because it would give Mercedes a great veteran driver lineup. But that was not the case as Antonelli was chosen instead.
The first possible reason Antonelli was chosen was due to the fact that Wolff did not want to make the same mistake he made with Verstappen when he was coming into Formula One. Verstappen was in a very similar situation as Antonelli when he was emerging into Formula One because he was extremely young, but talented. Teams had concerns if they were rushing him into Formula One so they acted cautious when thinking about adding him to their team. Verstappen was with Red Bull’s junior team but Mercedes boss Toto Wolff had discussions with Verstappen and wanted him to join Mercedes.
Further on into the discussion Toto Wolff decided to back away and let him stay with Red Bull. This was a mistake as Verstappen has gone on to become one of the most dominant drivers that we’ve seen with the 2023 season being a prime example where he won nineteen of the twenty two Grand Prix races. Wolff still remembers this decision and he definitely doesn’t wanna make the same mistake again so he’s willing to take the chance with Antonelli and see what the young Italian prodigy can become.
Another reason is that Mercedes doesn’t want to have two drivers competing for the number one spot. With George Russell and Lewis Hamilton last season they were both fighting for the number one spot which created tension and close racing. With Antonelli in the other spot it allows both drivers to grow without much tension between the two. Antonelli can take the season to learn the car and further progress while Russell can take charge and fight for possibly a championship in this competitive 2025 Formula One season.
