LOS ANGELES – The No. 9 UCLA Bruins are a win away from their best start in 21 years, but they'll face a Michigan State team desperate to end a five-game losing streak when the teams collide at the Rose Bowl on Saturday afternoon.

UCLA enters the Week 8 matchup as the Big Ten’s last remaining unbeaten team at 6-0, looking to secure its first winning season since 2023.

In his first season at the helm, head coach Bob Chesney has transformed a program that won just three games a year ago — redefining expectations in Westwood and putting the Bruins in contention for a berth in the College Football Playoff.

On the other sideline, head coach Pat Fitzgerald is looking to prove he is the right man to lead the Spartans back to relevance, as Michigan State has failed to finish a season .500 or better since 2021.

Two teams who appear to be heading in opposite directions. Here are three key factors to the Big Ten matchup.

UCLA RUSHING ATTACK

The Bruins enter Saturday with the Big Ten’s most productive rushing attack, averaging 231.0 yards per game and totaling 21 rushing touchdowns behind fifth-year running back Wayne Knight.

Since transferring from James Madison, Knight has emerged as the leader of UCLA’s backfield, recording 571 yards and 11 touchdowns on 84 carries. Following his rushing score against Wisconsin, Knight became the first Bruin to record a rushing touchdown in each of the team’s first six games of a season since Maurice Jones-Drew in 2005. Alongside Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas, Knight has helped form one of the conference’s most dangerous backfields.

UCLA’s ground game could be poised for another big performance against a Michigan State defense allowing the fifth-most rushing yards in the Big Ten, averaging 140.7 per game. The Spartans did limit No. 25 Northwestern to 3.2 yards per carry in last week’s 24-21 loss, but containing Knight and the Bruins’ three-headed rushing attack on the road presents a different challenge.

NEW QB IN TOWN

A week after Nico Iamaleava suffered an injury against Oregon, Chesney turned to 6-foot-6 quarterback Ty Dieffenbach, handing him his first career FBS start. Dieffenbach passed his first test in style, throwing for a career-high 264 yards on 22 completions in UCLA’s win over Wisconsin.

His best plays of the night came early in the fourth quarter, with the Bruins clinging to a three-point lead. Facing first-and-18 from his own 3-yard line, Dieffenbach connected with Landon Ellis down the sideline for a 28-yard gain to jump-start the drive.

A few plays later, he followed with a 33-yard completion to Semaj Morgan up the seam on a crucial third down to put UCLA into the red zone. Anthony Woods capped the 97-yard drive with a touchdown run from three yards out, extending UCLA’s lead to 10 and helping seal the victory.

Dieffenbach faces another challenge Saturday against a Michigan State secondary allowing 201.9 passing yards per game, ninth in the Big Ten. The Spartans have yet to surrender a 235-yard passer through seven games this season. For UCLA, establishing the ground game early could be key to creating opportunities for Dieffenbach to exploit the secondary with play-action passes over the middle.

TURNOVER BATTLE

While Chesney, Dieffenbach and UCLA’s rushing attack have commanded much of the attention during the Bruins’ remarkable start, defensive coordinator Colin Hitschler has built one of the nation’s most opportunistic defenses. UCLA ranks second in the FBS and first in the Big Ten with 19 takeaways, including 10 interceptions and nine fumble recoveries. The ability to force opposing offenses into mistakes has helped UCLA pitch first-half shutouts against San Diego State and Wisconsin.

Defensive dominance was on full display in UCLA’s upset of Oregon, when the Bruins forced seven turnovers at Autzen Stadium — their highest single-game total since 2003.

That aggressive unit now faces sophomore quarterback Alessio Milivojevic, who has protected the football well, going three consecutive games without throwing an interception. However, an early deficit and pressure from UCLA’s defensive front could force Milivojevic to push the ball down the field, giving the Bruins opportunities to add to their strong takeaway total.

Michigan State, meanwhile, has struggled to create those same opportunities, recording just three takeaways in seven games — tied for the fewest in the nation. The Spartans nearly forced a pivotal turnover in last week’s heartbreaking loss to Northwestern, when Anelu Lafaele delivered a blindside hit that knocked the ball loose. Unfortunately for Fitzgerald and the Spartans, Northwestern recovered the fumble and eventually turned the possession into a field goal that proved decisive in the three-point defeat.

If UCLA forces a turnover or two while establishing the ground game, the Bruins will have a prime opportunity to dominate at home and strengthen their case as legitimate College Football Playoff contenders.

NOTES: In addition to the Bruins looking for the program’s eighth 7-0 start in school history, UCLA will be wearing its baby blue throwback uniforms inspired by its 1954 national championship team for the homecoming contest and recognize the 2026 UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame Class at halftime.
