Clippers exploring James Harden trade as deadline looms taken at Intuit Dome (Los Angeles Clippers)

Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden (1) looks to score during an NBA basketball game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Thursday January 22nd, 2026 in Inglewood, California.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — With the Los Angeles Clippers trailing the Philadelphia 76ers 81–65 at halftime, a bombshell report sent shockwaves through the NBA landscape.

James Harden has requested a trade.

According to multiple league sources, the 36-year-old guard and the Clippers are actively working through potential scenarios to find a deal ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. While discussions are ongoing, the situation remains fluid and complicated — largely due to Harden’s contract.

Harden is owed $39.2 million this season and $42.3 million next year, with the second year structured as a player option. Because the deal is technically considered an expiring contract prior to that option, Harden holds veto power over any potential trade. He also carries a 15 percent trade kicker valued at approximately $2.36 million, adding another layer to negotiations.

The timing is striking. With the Clippers losing to the 76ers, 128-113 on Monday night, coach Tyronn Lue was not happy hearing the trade rumors surrounding Harden.

"I can't comment on rumors," coach Lue said.

He then was asked a follow up on what it has meant to have Harden part of this team over the last few seasons.

"He means a lot," coach Lue said postgame.

Not only does the news arrive during deadline week, but it also cuts to the core of the Clippers’ championship ambitions. Despite Harden’s leadership and production, the organization has privately acknowledged that this version of the roster may not be capable of reaching the ultimate goal — an NBA title.

Harden is averaging 25.4 points and 8.1 assists this season, but sources say his frustration with the direction of the team has been building. While he traveled with the Clippers during their Grammy road trip, Harden was ruled out Monday ahead of the team’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns. Head coach Tyronn Lue told reporters the former MVP would remain away from the team for personal reasons.

Those reasons are now clearer.

With Kawhi Leonard at 34 and Harden at 36, the Clippers appear ready to pivot toward a younger timeline. One name that has quickly surfaced: Darius Garland.

Garland, 26, is averaging 18.0 points, 6.9 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in 30 minutes per game this season for Cleveland. Injuries have slowed his development over the past few years, and he is currently dealing with a toe injury that sidelined him in the Cavaliers’ most recent game.

According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, the Clippers and Cavaliers have engaged in advanced discussions over the past 24 hours centered around a Harden–Garland framework. The financials align closely enough to make a near one-for-one swap feasible, creating a rare scenario of equal salary and star-level talent exchanged.

From the Clippers’ perspective, the appeal is obvious: youth, athleticism, and a long-term backcourt piece to pair with Leonard. For Cleveland, Harden would bring experience, playoff-tested scoring, and another offensive engine alongside Donovan Mitchell.

The timing adds intrigue. The Clippers are scheduled to host the Cavaliers on Wednesday night at Intuit Dome — just one day before the trade deadline.

For now, nothing is finalized.

But as the clock ticks down and conversations intensify, the Clippers find themselves at a franchise-defining crossroads.
