With a spot in the Western Conference Semifinals on the line, LAFC once again leaned on the duo that has terrorized MLS since early August. Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-min spearheaded an emphatic 4-1 victory over Austin FC at Q2 Stadium on Sunday evening, completing a two-game sweep in Round One.
Just the third team so far to advance into the Semifinals, Los Angeles will face the two-seeded Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place later this month in a win-or-go-home battle. Vancouver completed a sweep of their own over FC Dallas on Saturday with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory.
"I think we were dangerous with the ball going forward in transition, but also out of possession," said head coach Steve Cherundolo. "I was quite pleased with our tactical adjustments for today."
Bouanga provided a pair of first-half scores to help bury an Austin side early that had taken down the Black and Gold twice during the regular season, holding them without a goal in the process. His first score, a 24th-minute strike that caught Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver sprinting to get back to the net, marked the 100th in his LAFC career across all competitions.

Unsurprisingly, the milestone moment came on an assist from Son, who maneuvered past a charging Stuver to fire the ball across the pitch to an open Bouanga. Poised as ever, he found the back of the net to double the Los Angeles advantage.
"The answer is yes and with no hesitation," said Bouanga, regarding his belief in LAFC to go all the way and take home the MLS Cup. "There is a great team spirit right now; the whole team is together. The most important thing is to take it game by game. The team is very dynamic."
Just 20 minutes later, the 30-year-old struck again. As Austin continued to implode defensively, a perfectly placed header from Ryan Hollingshead led Bouanga towards the net with a full head of steam, using a perfectly-timed touch to send Brendan Hines-Ike to the turf before making it 3-0.

It was Son, however, who got the scoring started for Los Angeles to erase a discouraging first 20 minutes of the match. LAFC had been struggling to create chances in Austin territory as they struggled to retain possession before the South Korean star broke free down the pitch, broke out some razzle-dazzle dribbling and provided the game's first goal.
Assisted by Bouanga, the tandem made their mark all evening long as a stunned Austin crowd watched on. They continue to play with a chemistry that belies the fact they've only shared the pitch for a few months.

While the superstars dominated the scoresheet, Hugo Lloris had key moments of his own in goal for LAFC. His biggest came in the 39th minute, when a cross deflecting off the hand of Bouanga gifted Austin's Myrto Uzini with a crucial penalty.
Looking to cut the Austin deficit in half and make it 2-1, Uzini left his strike right down the middle, allowing Lloris to make the clutch save.

"Keeping the advantage of two goals was necessary today," said Lloris. "Even if you look at the score, I don't think the game was under control. That's just a part of the playoffs; anything can happen."
Austin would eventually convert on a penalty from Dani Pereira late in first half stoppage time after a hard foul from Ryan Porteous gifted them a second chance. That would mark the only score of the game for The Verde.
The lone goal of the second half for either squad came from LAFC's Jeremy Ebobisse, who came off the bench late in place of Son. Mark Delgado picked up the assist on the play as Los Angeles went up 4-1 to add the final touches on an emphatic road win.

The Black and Gold will now return home with a lengthy break before they return to action in the MLS Cup Playoffs. With an international break spanning from November 10-18, Bouanga and Son, among others, will return to their national teams for the next set of World Cup qualifiers.
When the squad finally returns to action, the stakes will be at their highest. The Semifinals' win-or-go-home format means that LAFC will have to pull out a victory in Vancouver, or their season will come to a disappointing end.
With confidence surging and momentum on their side, it's set to be a thrilling match with two of the league's most promising clubs laying everything on the line. The prize for victory? A spot in the Western Conference Finals, one step closer to the ultimate goal of securing an MLS Cup.
