Main Event

Makhachev (Submission 4:05 First Round) vs. Moicano

After Arman Tsarukyan pulled out of the Main Event, it was “Money” Moicano’s time to show what he had against the Lightweight Champion Makhachev. Unfortunately for Moicano, Makhachev finished the fight by submission only 4:05 into the first round.

When asked what was next, Makhachev responded with a simple answer.

“[Whoever] can make 155, just jump in the cage and stand in front of me.”

To start the opening round of the fight, it was something that nobody expected: Moicano landed a hard right hand that knocked down Makhachev. It was only a matter of time, though, that Makhachev got right back up and landed the first takedown of the match on “Money” Moicano. Makhachev controlled Moicano, and as soon as he went to get up, Makhachev moved to side control and locked in a brutal d’arce choke 4:05 into the first round.

Dvalishvili (Decision) vs. Nurmagomedov

The co-main event between Dvalishvili and Nurmagomedov was everything that the crowd wanted, with the fight going the distance and the table ruling in Dvalishvili’s favor (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).

Coming out of the corner in the fifth and final round, Dvalishvili looked very confident, playing to the crowd. His first takedown attempt was easily pushed aside, and the two continued to dance on their feet. Leading with an overhand right, Dvalishvili went in for the body at the same time, pushing Nurmagomedov against the cage and landing a few body shots before letting go. After separating, the “Merab” chants echoed through the arena as Dvalishvili denied another takedown attempt from Nurmagomedov, who landed a left hand on the chin of the champion. With a minute left in the fight, Dvalishvili went for another single-leg takedown, which Nurmaomedov pushed aside before landing a few strikes and a kick to the face of Dvalishvili. Dvalishvili landed a hard right hand, then took down Nurmagomedov with a sweep, letting him stand up, taking him down a second time, before letting him stand again with a celebration to the crowd, finally landing a third takedown while taking the back of Nurmagomedov, before popping up and celebrating knowing it was over.

In the fourth round, Dvalishvili was the first to shoot for a takedown which was denied by Nurmagomedov. It didn’t take long, though, for Dvalishvili to push Nurmagomedov against the cage and bring him down. Dvalishvili let Nurmagomedov get up, but Nurmagomedov flipped the script when he was able to takedown Dvalishvili in one of the top wrestling battles the UFC has seen. After standing up and separating, Dvalishvili landed a hard right on the forehead of Nurmagomedov, which briefly stunned him. The two exchanged takedown attempts that each defended with top-tier ability. With a minute left in the round, Nurmagomedov was showing signs of fatigue, and Dvalishvili pushed the pace, landing another takedown and taking his back where he would land numerous punches to end the fourth round.

During the beginning of the third round, “the Machine” shot for a single leg and briefly took Nurmagomedov down to a knee before he popped right back up. The two kept trading blows, neither seeming to shy away from the incoming attacks. Dvalishvili shot for another single-leg which was denied by Nurmagomedov showing the fantastic takedown defense between the two. Dvalishivili denied a takedown before sending a single-leg of his own, taking Nurmagomedov to the mat before letting him stand up. Right after, he shot a double-leg slamming Nurmagomedov to the ground, before getting in a tie-up along the fence and talking with ringside commentator Joe Rogan. Nurmagomedov landed a tough takedown, pushing Dvalishvili to the cage, which finished the third round while Dvalishili was holding up a No. 1 to the crowd.

In the second round, the two again maintained their distance, making sure to stay patient. It wasn’t until Dvalishvili got wild with a punch, did Nurmagomedov tag Dvalishvili with multiple punches and a knee. Dvalishvili returned a few blows before going for his first takedown attempt of the day which was rejected by Nurmagomedov. With the crowd chanting his name, Nurmagomedov tallied the first takedown of the evening, bringing Dvalishvili to the mat and taking his back. Dvalishvili escaped, not sustaining any major blows, bringing the fight to their feet. The pair exchanged blows, which it seemed Nurmagomedov got the best of, and the Russian followed up with two takedown attempts, which were each denied by Dvalishvili. The Georgian shot his own takedown, which was rejected and brought to the side of the cage before the two pushed off each other with 30 seconds to go. The two locked again with 10 to go before the horn blew for them to separate.

The start of the first round was not full of action, as both fighters were feeling out their opponent in the long five-round battle. The first significant strikes were from Dvalishvili, forcing Nurmagomedov briefly to the mat before he bounced right back up. Dvalishvili came back with another strong punch before the two backed away again. After landing a few more punches, Dvalishvili tripped and almost took down Nurmagomedov by accident. The two tangled before Nurmagomedov went for his first takedown, which was denied by Dvalishvili. Nurmagomedov followed 30 seconds later with a double-leg attempt which was denied by Dvalishvili as well. Nurmagomedov found his first significant strike on an overhand right that connected, but he was not able to make anything of it as the round ended shortly after.

Procházka (KO/TKO 3:01 Third Round) vs Hill

The Light Heavyweight Bout that everyone was looking forward to, Procházka and Hill stepped into the Octagon, and — as many expected — it ended in a technical knockout from Procházka 3:01 into the third round.

After the fight, Procházka said what he plans to do next.

“I want a third fight with Alex Pereira,” Procházka said.

At the start of the third round, both fighters embraced before each taking a step back and going back to their battle. Hill continued to go to the body before Procházka landed a shot that would bring Hill to the cage. The two exchanged punches in the clinch before separating. More strikes later, Procházka landed a straight which connected on the nose of Hill. The American hit Procházka with a knee, but it was not strong enough as he was dropped by a left hand from Procházka moments later. He threw strikes in the ground-and-pound before Hill got back up, and Procházka knocked him right back down, this time with a stray right hand. From there, Procházka finished the fight and forced a stoppage 3:01 into the third round.

The start of the second round was similar to the first and third, with both fighters staying on their feet and exchanging blows. Procházka showed off his creativity with a high kick followed by a jumping double knee — only the kick connecting. After a brief stoppage due to an eye poke from Procházka, the two went back to their boxing match and continued to let the hands fly. With Procházka still pressuring, Hill took advantage by landing a combination that ended in an uppercut. Another eye poke — this one from Hill — stopped the fight momentarily, but it returned with more shots traded from both. Hill came out hot this time with a right hand, but Procházka responded, nailing Hill numerous times in response. The two Light Heavyweights continued to trade blows left and right, with Hill starting to target the body until the second round ended.

To start the fight, the two kept their distances before Procházka landed a hard right hand, and Hill responding with his own. Hill landed a nasty combination, which finished with a knee to the face. Procházka continued to push the pace by landing a heavy left hand right on the chin of Hill knocking him down. Procházka was not able to finish the fight just yet, with Hill getting back to his feet and landing an equally hard punch to Procházka. The Czech continued to add pressure, landing numerous knees before Hill responded with a right hook of his own. At the very end of the round, Procházka landed two strikes to the face of Hill opening up a cut right on the nose.

Almeida vs. Spivac (KO/TKO 4:53 First Round)

Added to the Main Card yesterday in replacement for the Moicano vs. Dariush fight, Almeida and Spivac went toe-to-toe in a Heavyweight Bout that saw Almeida win by technical knockout at 4:53 in the first round.

To start the fight, Spivac threw a few kicks before landing a takedown on Almeida. The two grappled for a while before Almeida turned Spivac onto his back and took top position. After taking his back, Almeida looked for a choke until Spivac was able to reverse and spin to top position for himself, landing numerous ground and pound strikes. They both stood, and Almeida landed a hard right hook that stunned Spivac into the cage. Almeida continued the pressure and brought Spivac onto his stomach and flat on the mat. The Brazilian continued the strikes, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight.

Holland vs. de Ridder (Submission 3:31 First Round)

In the first fight of the Main Card, de Ridder showed off his spectacular ju-jitsu skills by submitting Holland 3:31 into the first round.

De Ridder was obviously very happy with how the fight went.

“Very happy,” de Ridder said. “Give me a top-five guy now… anybody, everybody.”

In the opening moments of the fight, de Ridder dodged a wild right hand from Holland looking to end the fight early, before de Ridder shot for a takedown. De Ridder was patient, only throwing an elbow or strike when needed, continuing to pin Holland’s back to the mat. After moving into side control, de Ridder took Holland’s back and slowly worked to a rear naked choke. From there, it was only a matter of time before Holland tapped on de Ridder's thigh to end the fight.

Prelims

Talbott vs. Barcelos (Unanimous Decision)

The final fight of the Prelims was a Bantamweight Bout between Talbott and Barcelos that finished in a decision in Barcelos’ favor (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).

At the start of the third round, Talbott landed three hard punches in a row before countering Barcelos’ takedown attempt and getting top position for the first time in the fight. After a restart due to Barcelos holding the cage, The two went back and forth exchanging punches and flying knees. They then flipped each other on the ground, each going from top to bottom position before returning to their feet. Talbott then hit Barcelos with a spinning back kick that landed directly on the right side of the face of Barcelos, who followed Talbott up with another takedown. In the final 20 seconds, Barcelos threw a series of heavy ground-and-pound strikes while Talbott covered up until the horn.

In the second round, Talbott landed an early right hand, followed by denying a takedown. Shortly after, Barcelos shot another takedown, this time connecting and bringing Talbott to the mat. A minute later, Talbott managed to escape and get to his feet, denying two more quick takedown attempts before Barcelos hip-threw Talbott back down to the ground. Talbott escaped 30 seconds later and landed a hard kick on Barcelos. The two traded uppercuts before Barcelos landed a jab right on the cheek of Talbott. Each fighter landed multiple more punches before Barcelos brought Talbott down with another single-leg.

During the first round, Barcelos made his strategy very apparent. As soon as the fight started, he shot a single-leg takedown that was defended at least for the moment by Talbott. Barcelos continued to work on Talbott and tallied his first of takedown a minute into the fight. Barcelos controlled Talbott, taking his back before working into a rear naked choke that seemed to be locked in. Talbott managed to push Barcelos’ arm above his neck and escaped the choke, but was still held down to the mat. Barcelos continued to maintain position on Talbott’s back while finding elbows throughout the final minute of the round.

Reese vs. Bekoev (KO/TKO 3:04 First Round)

In his first match of UFC, Bekoev knocked out Reese 3:04 into the first round.

In the first and only round, the two middleweights let the punches fly, each connecting early on. As Bekoev was aiming to finish a single-leg takedown, Reese landed an elbow to the side of the face of Bekoev and then got his arm and almost finished the Russian with an armbar. Bekoev slipped through the armbar attempt and shortly after sent a barrage of shots toward Reese that all connected, knocking Reese out 3:04 into the first round.

Bekoev, overwhelmed with emotion, said he would love to fight at UFC 314 in Miami this April.

Elekana vs. Guskov (Submission 3:33 Second Round)

The Light Heavyweight fight between Guskov vs. Elekana was the first submission of the night due to a guillotine choke 3:33 into the second round.

During that second round, the two fighters were on their feet for the beginning, trying to find an opening to throw a punch or go for a takedown. Guskov finally cornered Elekana and landed numerous hard strikes standing up against the cage. Elekana returned the favor by drilling Guskov, who in turn went to the body before returning to the head. From then on, Elekana was stuck against the cage and basically gave up, allowing Guskov to trap him in a guillotine to end the fight.

In the first round, Guskov and Elekana went toe to toe before Elekana took the back of Guskov and attempted a choke from behind. Guskov showed great submission defense, holding off Elekana as he ate a few punches and elbows, all the while Elekana continued to go for a rear naked choke. Elekana controlled the back of Guskov for two minutes, still going for a choke as he threw elbows the entire time, trying to tire out the No. 13 contender. Guskov managed to flip to the back of Elekana and got a deep rear naked choke of his own. The Intuit Dome was so loud that the referee didn’t hear the horn, so he stopped the round late. During those extra few seconds, Elekana tapped, but the fight continued as the round had already ended.

Dawson (Unanimous Decision) vs. Ferreira

The first fight of the Prelims had Dawson and Ferreira show off their grappling skills, which saw Dawson winning by decision (30-27 x3).

After the fight, Dawson said that he felt bad that Beneil Dariush was the odd man out and got left off the card for tonight's event and called him out for UFC 314 in April at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida.

The third round started the way the entire fight prior had gone, with Dawson taking down Ferreira and trying to pass guard. The referee stood both of them up, and the two traded a bunch of punches before Dawson shot and successfully took down Ferreira again. He managed to get numerous opportunities to sit up and land multiple ground-and-pound strikes, before taking Ferreira’s back and going for a rear naked choke until the fight ended.

During the second round, Ferreira countered a takedown and got top position for himself briefly. The two got back up and let a few heavy right and left hands fly before Dawson took down Ferreira and controlled him with elbows and punches against the cage. Dawson held Ferreira against the cage for nearly two minutes.

In the first round, the two had a feeling-out period while letting strikes fly. Dawson landed the first takedown and took the back of Ferreira, nearly locking in a guillotine choke. When Ferreira went to get up, Dawson held onto the foot of the Brazilian and landed a hard kick to the face. Dawson controlled Ferreira back to the mat, pushing him into the cage wall. The fight ended on the ground but not before Dawson landed a few hard ground-and-pound strikes.

Early Prelims

Rosa vs. Perez (Unanimous Decision)

The final fight of the Early Prelims was a striking battle between Perez and Rosa, with Perez winning by decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27).

The third round was a stand-up battle between Perez and Rosa, who traded punches on their feet. Perez seemed to land numerous combinations, but each time Rosa would send her own the other direction that would connect. They stood the entire round exchanging blows that connected, though none seemed to stun the other. Perez kept targeting the legs while Rosa went straight for the head.

During the second round, Rosa continued to work the legs of Perez, who started to get some major red marks on her thighs. Rosa denied another takedown attempt from Perez, and the two continued to block each other's strike for the next few minutes before Rosa was finally able to get one through. Right as the punch hit, however, Perez shot a single-leg and took Rosa to the mat in the half-guard position. Perez maintained the top position until the airhorn sounded signaling the end of the second round.

To start the match, the two spent little time on their feet, with Perez shooting a double-leg takedown only 20 seconds in. Rosa managed to get up landing a kick or two in the process and denying two Perez takedown attempts. Rosa looked to be playing the long game, working the legs of Perez with numerous kicks that landed just above the knee.

Nakamura vs. Gafurov (Unanimous Decision)

The night continued to get better, with Nakamura and Gafurov going at it in a Bantamweight Bout that saw the underdog Gafurov taking it by decision (30-27 x3).

The two embraced at the start of the third round and Gafurov, who had built momentum in the earlier rounds, continued where he left off. He landed a hard kick to Nakamura's head before knocking him down with a straight kick to the body. After a flurry of punches, Nakamura landed on top of Gafurov and nearly locked in an arm triangle. Gafurov was able to escape and get back to his feet just in time for the final 30 seconds of the fight. The two squared off before embracing one more time at the end of the fight.

In the second round, Nakamura also had Gafurov all over him. The Hungarian nearly dropped Nakamura by landing a hard right hand on the chin. Nakamura responded shortly after with a right of his own before attempting a takedown that was denied by Gafurov. When up against the cage, Nakamura looked to finally be back in control, but Gafurov knocked Nakamura down a second time with a beautiful jab-straight combination that hid the right hand perfectly. Gafurov maintained a strong position, landing numerous knees to the body while they were tied up.

At the start of the fight, both fighters stayed on their feet trading blows, and Gafurov held his own with a few hard body shots. The heavy underdog hit Nakamura with a brutal hand that knocked Nakamura to the mat. Gafurov would work in the top position until the final bell would ring.

Turcios vs. Sopaj (Unanimous Decision)

The second fight of the night between Turcios and Sopaj was a Bantamweight Bout that went to the judge’s table as well in favor of Sopaj (30-27, 30-27, 29-38).

Less than 15 seconds in the third round, Sopaj landed a jab-straight combination that stunned Turcios heavily and cut him above the other eye and nose. Sopaj tried for the finish, landing a massive amount of shots, but Turcios kept standing. Finally getting back to his feet, Sopaj landed another knee, but Turcios kept upright. It seemed Turcios almost got a rear naked choke, but Sopaj countered the submission beautifully by allowing him to slide over his back. With 10 seconds to go, the two squared off before Sopaj threw a rolling thunder that connected on Turcios.

Sopaj was very strong early, with a few hard leg kicks that got Turcios leaning backward. Both fighters stayed on their feet while exchanging blows and showing off their kickboxing abilities. With three minutes left in the round, “Let’s go Ricky” chants were being screamed from the crowd at the Intuit Dome. The fighters stayed on their feat before Turcios took down Sopaj and locked in a rear naked choke that Sopaj escaped from with relative ease. At the end of the round, both Sopaj and Turcios landed some heavy blows that resulted in Turcios getting a cut above his right eye.

During the second round, Sopaj landed a few more hard punches to the head of Turcios, who continued to absorb the shots and be aggressive. Sopaj landed a takedown before Turcios escaped and tied up the Albanian again. Sopaj landed a few hard knees to the head of Turcios, who continued to stand and fight. With 30 seconds left, the two stood and swung wildly, with Sopaj connecting a hard jab and straight combination.

Tagir Ulanbekov (Unanimous Decision) vs. Clayton Carpenter

The first fight of the night started with a bang as Carpenter and Ulanbekov faced off in a Flyweight Bout, where Ulanbekov won by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

After the win, Ulanbekov called out Flyweight Title holder Alexandre Pantoja.

The third round started as a feeling-out period before Ulanbekov landed a hard combination on Carpenter. The American landed a few leg kicks and punches of his own before attempting a takedown, which led to a tie-up on the side of the cage. With about a minute and a half remaining, Ulanbekov landed another takedown on Carpenter. He held the position before passing to side control, where the fight would end.

In the second round, both fighters started utilizing their hands with numerous strong punches early. Carpenter landed his first takedown of the night when Ulanbekov threw a wild leg kick that Carpenter grabbed for the single-leg. Carpenter controlled in the half-guard for over a minute before Ulanbekov escaped and threw a nearly immediate double-leg takedown attempt. Carpenter avoided the first attempt by kicking his legs back to a north-south position but was taken to the ground shortly after. The final minutes of the round were spent with Ulanbekov in the top-guard position.

During the first round, the two traded heavy body and leg kicks before Ulanbekov tallied the first takedown of the night. Ulanbekov kept control of Carpenter from a guard position and utilized the ground-and-pound on Carpenter who was struggling to avoid the elbows. Trying to get to a triangle choke, Ulanbekov played great defense from the top position and continued to throw heavy elbows. Carpenter got to his feet with about a minute left in the first round and went back to the legs with kicks.
