ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Following the conclusion of the MLB trade deadline, Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian announced that outfielder Mike Trout had a setback in his recovery from left meniscus surgery, shutting down his injury rehabilitation.
Trout, 32, had surgery May 3 to repair a torn left meniscus.
In an extended recovery, he was limited to two innings of a rehab outing with Triple-A Salt Lake on July 23, where he experienced discomfort in his left knee.
Returning to Anaheim the following day for an evaluation, he received positive news on July 26, when his magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) came back clean with no major damage, excluding scar tissue buildup and inflammation.
Noting that he could swing a bat without pain, Trout had not attempted to run following his return to Anaheim, with hopes of a quick return and limited or no rehab appearances needed before re-joining the Angels.
On Tuesday, Minasian did not provide details on the extent of Trout's setback or how long the rehab would be shutdown, noting he will be re-evaluated.
When asked if Trout could return to the field this season, Minasian replied, "We'll see."
Trout played 29 games for the Angels this year, hitting 10 home runs while posting a 136 OPS+.
Limited to 266 total games from 2021-2024, the projected Hall-of-Famer and Angels all-time leader in multiple categories has missed more than 55% of the Angels' games during the past four seasons with multiple injuries.
Rendon update
Tuesday also came with the announcement that Anthony Rendon was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 27) with lower back inflammation.
Rendon, 34, has been limited to 33 games in 2024 with a hamstring injury.
"I took a swing and I felt a sensation going down my butt, which isn't good," Rendon said. "It kind of built up to sensations going down my leg and feeling a little bit heavier."
Rendon has slashed .170/.237/.226 since returning from the injured list with a hamstring tear. He said he hopes to return as soon as the injured list stint is up, which is Tuesday August 6 against the New York Yankees.
"(I've) been on some anti-inflammatories so hopefully that's going to reduce it and calm it down," Rendon said. "I plan on coming back when the IL stint is over. I want to come back."
In the fifth year of his seven-year, $245 million contract, he has played just 233 games with the Angels (35.7% of potential games). During his career with the Angels, he has hit .245 with 22 home runs and a 102 OPS+.
Michael Stefanic was recalled from Salt Lake to fill Rendon's roster spot.
Baumann joins Angels
Relief pitcher Mike Baumann reported to the Angels Wednesday to fill the roster spot left when Luis Garcia was traded to the Boston Red Sox.
Baumann has a 4.41 ERA with three different teams this season. He has been designated for assignment by the Orioles, Mariners and Giants.
"I'm very fortunate to be here. I've heard nothing but good things about this organization from guys around the league," Baumann said. "I've faced this team a few times this year and they haven't made it easy on me so I'm happy to be on this side of the clubhouse."
