Tommy Edman wins NLCS MVP, Dodgers set to play Yankees

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers are advancing to the World Series for the fourth time in eight seasons.

They eliminated the New York Mets in six games, winning 10-4 on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.

This will mark the Dodgers' 22nd appearance in the World Series, the most in National League history as they seek their eighth championship.

The Dodgers will face the New York Yankees for the first time since 1981. Historically, the Yankees hold an 8-3 record against the Dodgers in the World Series.

In 1981, the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in six games and won the World Series, despite the Yankees having home-field advantage. However, in 2024, the situation has changed, as the Dodgers will host Game 1 on Friday night.

Dave Roberts joins Bruce Bochy as the only active managers to win four pennants.

Tommy Edman kickstarted the Dodgers’ offense by driving in the first four runs with a double and a two-run home run in the third inning against left-hander Sean Manaea.

The front office made a trade that they knew wouldn’t have much impact come October. Edman was acquired in a three-team trade from the Cardinals back in July.

Edman  hit 11 for 26 (.407) in the NLCS, earning him the NLCS MVP award. He also tied Corey Seager, who won the 2020 NLCS MVP, with the most RBIs in a single postseason series.

Manaea didn’t deliver the performance his team needed to force a Game 7. He pitched two innings, allowing six hits and five runs on 64 pitches. The troubles began in the first inning when Shohei Ohtani led off with a single.

Teoscar Hernandez then ended his hitless streak of 0 for 18 by getting two singles in his first two at-bats.

Ohtani is set to play in his first World Series in his seventh season, now with the Dodgers. Ohtani shared how he feels on playing in his first ever World Series.

"It's the place that I've dreamt of playing all my life," Ohtani said.

Will Smith hit a two-run home run to center field off right-hander Phil Maton in the third inning, extending the Dodgers' lead to 6-1.

In Game 6, the Dodgers and Mets both used 14 pitchers and recorded 11 hits each.

The Dodgers decided to start right-hander Michael Kopech for Game 6, marking his first career playoff appearance. He began the game by issuing a leadoff walk to Francisco Lindor, followed by a wild pitch. With two outs, Pete Alonso hit a grounder to second base, allowing Lindor to score due to a throwing error by Chris Taylor, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Right-handed pitchers Ben Casparius, Anthony Banda, and Ryan Brasier were the first three relievers used by Roberts, collectively allowing two runs. Evan Phillips, Daniel Hudson, and Blake Treinen then came in and effectively shut down the Mets over the final four innings. This marked the second bullpen game of the series.

The Dodgers took an early lead against the Mets and maintained it throughout the series, scoring a total of 46 runs. This was the most runs scored in a postseason series by a National League team
