Fury and Joshua meet Dec. 11 in Cardiff after years of false starts

Just weeks ago, this fight looked like it might slip away again. Tyson Fury, frustrated over where the bout would actually take place, threatened to walk from the negotiating table entirely and floated a third fight with Oleksandr Usyk instead. It was the kind of near-collapse that's defined this matchup for a decade.

Fury and Anthony Joshua have circled each other since 2015, an all-British heavyweight rivalry that's survived Fury's chaos years, Joshua's title runs and losses, and more than one round of collapsed talks in between. Both men have fought almost everyone else first. Wilder trilogies, Usyk rematches, tune-up wins over lesser names, all while the fight British boxing actually wanted sat unfinished.

That ends Dec. 11. Fury and Joshua will meet at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, streaming live worldwide on Netflix. Turki Alalshikh, owner of Ring Magazine and chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority made it official Thursday, writing that "for 15 years no one has been able to make this fight" before confirming it was finally done.

The promotional setup is worth untangling. This isn't a Zuffa Boxing card in the way Garcia-Benn was. Ring Magazine, which Alalshikh owns, is promoting the fight, with UFC and Zuffa Boxing president Dana White partnered alongside him. Netflix carries the broadcast. It's a three-way arrangement that's become increasingly familiar in boxing's biggest fights this year.

It also fits a pattern White has talked about openly. At the Garcia-Benn presser last month, he described Zuffa's long game as building fight cards stacked from top to bottom, the same way UFC does, so fans show up excited for the whole night rather than one marquee bout. Fury-Joshua doesn't carry Zuffa's name on it, but it lands squarely in the orbit White and Alalshikh have been building around Netflix all year.

It's also arriving into a heavyweight division that's anything but unified. Agit Kabayel is expected to lock in his first WBC title defense for November in Germany. Usyk, meanwhile, is eyeing Deontay Wilder for March 2027. Fury-Joshua carries no title implications at all, but it's arguably the biggest heavyweight fight on the calendar regardless of what any of the belts say.

And that's the point. No world championship is at stake Dec. 11, but few fights in the sport carry this much weight without one. Fury and Joshua are both former unified champions, both massive commercial draws, and both have spent the better part of a decade with this specific rivalry hanging over their careers. This was always going to be a legacy fight first.

The location fight explains why it almost didn't happen. Joshua reportedly had UK soil written into his deal from the start, unwilling to budge on bringing the fight home. Fury preferred a bigger stage in the U.S. and pushed back hard enough that talks nearly fell apart again before Cardiff won out.

Where it goes from here matters just as much as the fight itself. A Fury win keeps his name in the Usyk conversation, and the clock is a real factor there. Usyk has said he's eyeing retirement in the next couple of years, meaning a Fury-Usyk trilogy fight might not happen at all if Fury doesn't get through Joshua first. 

A Joshua win reopens doors that looked closed a year ago. Either way, it's one more heavyweight domino falling into place in a division that's currently split across three different promotional worlds. For Fury and Joshua, though, Dec. 11 is something this fight hasn't had in over a decade: an actual date and location.
