Wayne Knight leads offensive explosion in UCLA defeat of Purdue

PASADENA, Calif. - Senior running back Wayne Knight has been nothing short of special in his first two games as a Bruin and Saturday's matchup against Purdue was no different. 

The Bruins were at their most complete offensively in the first Big Ten game of the season, one where they went home as the victors 52-38, but as strong as the passing game was with senior quarterback Nico Iamaleava having his best game of the season so far, throwing for 276 yards and three touchdowns, the Bruin backfield is the undeniable strong suit of the roster. 

UCLA out-rushed Purdue 369-63 and scored four of their seven touchdowns on the run. Seniors Jaivian Thomas and Anthony Woods both scored at least one touchdown in the game, but Knight, to no surprise, was the undisputed leader. 

Passing and Rushing

Knight averaged 9.8 yards per carry and finished the game with 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns as he continues to assert himself as one of the premier running backs in the NCAA. 

Pairing the Bruins' running back prowess with their strongest passing performance yet led to a 52-point scoring day, their highest-scoring game since they scored 59 points against North Carolina Central in 2023, but the Bruins needed each and every point as Purdue didn't make things easy on them. 

The Boilermakers seemed to answer the Bruins on nearly every drive throughout most of the game and even if the end result finished with UCLA winning with a two-touchdown lead, things didn't feel that way most of the time.

Passing from Purdue

Purdue's biggest strength was the passing performance from junior quarterback Ryan Browne, who in turn exposed that the weakest aspect of the Bruins at this point is their passing defense.

"I think that quarterback is elite," head coach Bob Chesney said of Browne. "I think we were able to keep the running backs in check for the most part, but the quarterback and his timing with the receivers, the routes they ran, the precision and the places he put it, [we] just couldn't really get much pressure."

The Boilermakers had 425 passing yards to the Bruins' 278 and Browne averaged a massive 21.3 yards per completion. 

When it comes to UCLA's paltry passing defense, Chesney isn't worried about the physical talent they have at their disposal, but he's seeing flaws in their execution that paved the way for Browne and the Boilermakers to dominate the game from the air. 

"I felt like the pressure mounted a little bit and we were not as keen in our technique as we needed to be," Chesney said. "We've got guys that are fast. We've got guys that are skilled. We've got guys that could run and bang with almost anybody... We can't put ourselves in some sort of panic mode."

Omosigho's Onslaught

But even though one half of the UCLA defense left something to be desired, the other half excelled, particularly senior linebacker Sammy Omosigho. 

Omosigho finished the game with 12 total tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles, with both of those fumbles being recovered by junior defensive lineman Sahir West. 

Those sacks proved to be crucial, even game-saving, because the Bruins scored on both of the drives that came about because of those turnovers.

Back to Winning Ways

The first game and first win of the conference season for UCLA showed off a myriad of the Bruins' talents, and revealed the imperfections they need to address. 

But a 3-0 start to the season, the first time that's happened for the program since 2023, is a concrete reflection of the change that's been felt within UCLA football and a welcome return to a culture of success that for years felt lost.

"It means everything. I think that just speaks to the growth of the team and speaks to Coach Ches and how he got us to buy in... It's just winning ways man," Iamaleava said.
