CARSON, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy added another major piece to their summer rebuild Saturday, signing former FC Barcelona and Spanish international midfielder Sergi Roberto as a free agent through June 2028, with an option for the 2028-29 season.
The 34-year-old Roberto joins the Galaxy after two seasons with Como 1907 in Italy’s Serie A, bringing more than a decade of experience at Barcelona and a résumé that includes 25 trophies. He will occupy an international roster slot and is expected to provide the Galaxy with another experienced presence as the club attempts to turn around a disappointing 2026 season.
“Sergi brings a combination of leadership, technical quality, tactical intelligence, and championship experience that few players have,” Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz said via press release. “He has been a key member of some of the greatest teams of his generation and understands not only what it takes to win, but what it means to be a winning team.”

His time at Barca included seven La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey trophies and two UEFA Champions League championships, among other honors. His most memorable moment came in March 2017, when Roberto scored the stoppage-time winner in Barcelona’s historic 6-1 comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
That experience is a major part of what the Galaxy are acquiring. Roberto’s numbers in Italy were modest, with one goal and one assist in 37 appearances across all competitions for Como, but his role there extended beyond the scoresheet. He was part of the club’s return to Serie A and helped Como secure its first-ever UEFA Champions League qualification during the 2025-26 season.
The Galaxy are hoping that experience can translate to a team that has spent much of 2026 trying to find its footing.
Roberto also brings a familiar connection to the Galaxy roster. He spent four seasons alongside Riqui Puig at Barcelona from 2018-22, with the pair sharing the field during Barcelona’s 2018-19 La Liga title run and the club’s 2020-21 Copa del Rey triumph.
Puig has been an important part of the Galaxy since joining the club, but his absence has left the midfield without one of its primary creative influences. Roberto now gives the Galaxy another player who understands Puig’s game, even as Puig continues his recovery.
The signing also lines up with the club's latest exit. Kuntz noted last Saturday that they were in the late stages of an outgoing transfer of midfielder Edwin Cerrillo. Just a week later, he's on his way south of the border to Club America for a fee of over $1 million. Cerrillo joined LA from FC Dallas, who remain entitled to a portion of the transfer fee through the sell-on clause from the original sale, in August 2023 and played an integral role in the 2024 MLS Cup-winning side.

The Galaxy currently sit 12th in the Western Conference with 15 matches remaining as Leagues Cup rolls on. Their summer additions now give the club a very different group for the final stretch of the season.
Whether those moves are enough to change the Galaxy’s fortunes remains to be seen. Roberto, however, arrives with something few players on the roster can match: firsthand experience of what it takes to win at the highest level of club soccer.
