How fate brought Lakers' Jake LaRavia and his wife together taken in Los Angeles (Los Angeles Lakers)

NBA careers are built on preparation, timing, and opportunity. Love stories, however, tend to follow no such script.

In this first-person essay, Taja LaRavia shares the deeply personal story of how a chance encounter on a flight — followed by an even more improbable reunion less than 24 hours later — led her to Los Angeles Lakers forward Jake LaRavia. What began as a quiet moment between two strangers unfolded across borders, long-distance seasons, and the demands of professional basketball, ultimately becoming a partnership rooted in faith, patience, and intention.

Away from the bright lights of the NBA, this is a story about timing, belief, and trusting the moments that feel bigger than coincidence — told in Taja’s own words.

It was supposed to be a weekend getaway to Chicago. It ended up changing my life forever.

What started with a simple glance on an airplane between two strangers soon became the start of an unlikely love story I had only read in books or seen in movies.

Amidst the pandemic chaos, my friend and I booked a last-minute trip to Chicago to reset and catch a break once borders opened. After a fun-filled long weekend, exploring a new city I set on my way back home to Toronto – slumped for the short flight.

In between tosses and turns, I noticed a gentleman sitting across the aisle. No words were exchanged, just a glance. After navigating customs, we went our separate ways.

I didn’t think twice about the brief interaction. He was just another stranger in a crowded airport, and I was tired and looking forward to returning home. Our flight landed late on Monday, May 23, 2022, and I had a work commitment the following morning.

The next day, I participated in my work scavenger hunt in downtown Toronto where we were divided in groups and had to complete various activities which earned points, creating friendly competition. With the timer underway, at the base of the CN Tower, I saw several colleagues in a cluster, trying to collect two specific inputs: taking a picture with someone taller than your tallest team member and a five-second race with a stranger.

As they approached a tall stranger, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was my tall stranger. It was the man I had seen on the plane. We locked eyes again, but this time we wouldn’t let the moment pass us again.

He recognized me, confirming that I was on his flight yesterday. I remember approaching my colleague who I had met for the first time that day to tell her the story with sheer excitement – I had to take a few seconds to myself and process what I was experiencing.

To this day it still feels surreal. The chances of having two encounters in less than 24 hours in a city of over three million people? You know the saying one in a million? Try one in 3 million. It was his first time in Canada, he was only in town for one day and we connected not once, but twice? It was meant to be.

If I was sure about one thing, this was God’s work. It wasn’t until the second encounter, that I realized it was no coincidence and at that point I couldn’t let this moment pass me by again, so I reached out to him on Instagram. I had no idea that this day would be the start of forever with the love of my life.

From that moment on, we spoke daily, bridging the distance between us with countless texts and calls. I would keep him company as he travelled from city to city for pre-draft workouts and we continued to get to know each other, impatiently waiting until we could plan a visit. Fast forward two and a half months later, after he got drafted to the Memphis Grizzlies and played in the NBA Summer League, we were finally able to meet in person. I guess you can now predict how that went.

Our two weeks cemented the significance we would hold in each other’s lives. You’re probably thinking the same thing I did, she’s crazy booking a two-week trip to visit a man she barely knew and in a whole different country. Looking back, you’re probably right, but in the moment my heart and mind were aligned in telling me I had to see this through and walk through the open door with a man I was destined to be with.

Was everything during that time sunshine and rainbows? Of course not. We had never exchanged more than 10 words in person, and we were sharing the same space for two weeks, but it continued to feel right, solidifying the future we knew we wanted together.

We had such an amazing time – furnishing his new place, going on our first date to the zoo, cooking, and just enjoying being together. Two strangers turned into partners. What came after was years of long-distance, tough goodbyes, and limited time, but none of that outweighed the endless laughs, smiles, and memories. We would count down the days until our next visit and that served as a reminder to cherish our time together.

Starting off a relationship apart allowed us to build a strong foundation which only grew with time. It made me appreciate the simple joys such as quick post-game calls to let me know he arrived safely and the extra five minutes at airport drop-offs because there was no traffic.

Our long-distance romance flourished despite Jake’s demanding NBA schedule and my corporate job, leading to our engagement. We just knew. It felt like God kept pulling us together. Jake proposed where our first words were exchanged and first image was taken at the base of the CN Tower on April 27, 2025.

That summer, Burlington, Ontario was our base so that we could enjoy time together and with my family before Jake started his fourth season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Toronto will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Who knew that overlapping for only a few hours would become pivotal in our story, solidifying what would become a lifetime.

On a routine visit, with the Lakers’ training camp looming, and no desire to stay long-distance, we made a bold, last-minute decision to elope on September 27, 2025. On a sun-kissed weekend in Laguna Beach, we exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony that was as unconventional as our love story. Eschewing tradition, our day reflected our authentic selves—complete with documentary-style portraits, a photoshoot at a local bar, and moments captured alongside a classic car. We wanted it to feel like us, personal, effortless, and full of love. The result was a wedding that broke the mold, blending effortless cool with raw emotion.

With the season and a new chapter underway, we are now building our lives in beautiful South Bay. Since becoming an American Permanent Resident, I am thankful to no longer track days spent in the U.S. in my notes app or to be bound by cross-border regulations. In an ever-changing world, what has remained constant is our love which continues to blossom and deepen. If there is one thing I have learned, it’s that in life we will always win together. Now let’s secure that second ring!
