INGLEWOOD, Calif. — In a thrilling Sunday afternoon showdown at SoFi Stadium, the Los Angeles Chargers secured a dramatic 23-20 victory over the Denver Broncos, propelled by a walk-off 43-yard field goal in the final seconds of the game. But as jubilant fans celebrated the win, the Chargers were also left reeling from a significant injury blow to their star running back, Najee Harris.

It was a game that had it all — high stakes, divisional rivals, clutch moments, and a heartbreaking turn of events. The Chargers, having already won two straight divisional games, were looking to extend their dominance in the AFC West. However, things got off to a rocky start. Their defense, aggressive and stingy, shut down the Chargers’ offense early, forcing a series of punts and frustrating quarterback Justin Herbert.
But Herbert, ever the resilient leader, found his rhythm in the second half. He connected with Keenan Allen on a brilliant 20-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 20-20 late in the fourth quarter. The game was shaping up to be a classic, a back-and-forth affair that would come down to the wire.
Then came the defining moment.
With less than two minutes left in regulation, the Chargers’ defense stepped up and forced another punt by the Broncos. As the clock ticked down, Herbert methodically led the Chargers down the field, a mix of quick passes and smart runs setting up kicker Cameron Dicker for the game-winning attempt.
The snap was clean. Dicker’s kick soared through the air. As the ball split the uprights, the stadium erupted in a chorus of cheers, sealing a 23-20 win for the Chargers.
“He’s cold blooded,” Harbaugh on Dicker’s game-winning field goal.
Despite the win, the Chargers’ locker room was a mix of celebration and concern. The victory over the Broncos marked their third consecutive divisional win, a feat that boosted their playoff aspirations. But the mood quickly turned somber when news broke that running back Najee Harris had suffered a likely Achilles injury during the second quarter.
Harris had been an integral part of the Chargers’ offense since joining the team this season after a successful four-year stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Known for his power running and ability to break tackles, Harris had quickly become a fan favorite in Los Angeles. But during a routine play in the second quarter, Harris went down without any contact, clutching his lower leg in obvious pain.
The moment was eerily reminiscent of a worst-case scenario, and unfortunately, the initial diagnosis was grim. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed post-game that Harris was undergoing imaging, though the team had little optimism regarding the injury. Early reports suggested a torn Achilles, which would almost certainly sideline Harris for the remainder of the season.
“He’s getting imaging right now,” Harbaugh said.

It was a devastating blow not only for Harris but also for the Chargers’ offense, which had been looking forward to having him be part of the team this season. Harris had already faced adversity this year after dealing with an eye injury sustained in a Fourth of July fireworks accident. The injury had limited his participation in training camp, and while he was able to suit up for the start of the season, his availability was limited.
For Harris, this marked the first significant injury of his career. He had been a model of durability during his first four years with the Steelers, playing in every game across four full seasons. The former Alabama standout had been known for his toughness and consistency, often carrying the load for Pittsburgh’s offense. But now, the harsh realities of the NFL were hitting home for Harris, who had never experienced an injury of this magnitude.
For now, though, it was uncertain when—or if—Harris would return to the field this season. The Chargers would have to rely on their depth at running back to fill the void left by their star.
As the Chargers look to build on their three-game divisional winning streak, the team’s ability to overcome adversity will be tested like never before. Harris’ injury may be a setback, but the win over the Broncos proved that the Chargers are capable of handling pressure, even when the odds are stacked against them.
For now, though, the focus is on celebrating the hard-fought victory and keeping their eyes firmly on the next game as they travel to New York to take on the Giants next Sunday. The road ahead for the Chargers is far from smooth, but if this game was any indication, they’re a team that never gives up, no matter the challenge in front of them.
