SAN DIEGO - Third baseman Manny Machado will not be the only player representing the San Diego Padres in Atlanta for the MLB All-Star game after Major League Baseball on Sunday released the remaining roster spots that included left-fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and right-handed relieving pitcher Jason Adam.
Respectively, this marks back-to-back years with three players from the Padres to be selected for the All-Star game. For Machado and Tatis Jr., this will be their third time to receive the honors, while this will be Adam's first time experiencing this milestone and league-wide recognition.
Almost a full-year since being traded by the Rays before the deadline, Adam has solidified his role in the Padres’ bullpen, being one of the big, relied on arms on a regular basis.
Adam has appeared in 43 games in 2025 and owns a 6-3 record to go along with 1.65 ERA, 51 strikeouts in 43 ⅔ innings. Pitching in 70 ⅓ innings with a 9-3 record since joining the Friars, he possesses a 1.33 ERA, allowing 15 runs on 47 hits with 82 strikeouts and 26 walks.
Opponents are hitting just .181 against him in 70 games as a member of the Padres, showcasing why he is the lone pitcher to represent a well distinguished bullpen that already includes Robert Suárez, Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada. Adam has played in 319 games over his eight year career to pair with a 2.70 ERA, 371 strikeouts and 24 saves in 313 ⅓ innings pitched.
It was a topic of discussion during the fan voting process for Machado, facing against the Dodgers’ Max Muncy for the National League third baseman position. When Muncy suffered a knee injury during his game on July 2 that placed him on the injured list, it was certain that the Padres’ hot corner specialist would be named as the starter.
This season, the two-time Gold-Glover and Silver Slugger winner has continued his excellence at the position. He's batting .289 in 336 plate appearances with 98 hits, 14 home runs, 52 RBIs, 53 runs with eight stolen bases. He leads his club in slugging percentage (.475), OPS (.827), RBIs and doubles (21).
Machado is either leading or at least in the top three in almost every statistical category for the Padres. In his 14 season in the major league, Machado looks to join a prestigious group, currently two more hits away from capturing 2,000 career hits.
The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft has a total of 7,145 at-bats and has hit 356 HRs, 1101 RBIs, 1044 runs, 107 SB and possesses a .280 batting average to go with a .339 on-base percentage and a .827 OPS.
Tatis Jr. nomination was viewed as a surprise for most people tuned into the league. However, for some people who would glance at his name on the roster, wouldn’t bat an eye considering his red-hot MVP like start to the season.
In his first 29 games into the season, Tatis was batting .386 with eight HRs, 18 RBIs, a .445 OBP and a .620 SLG. Since the month of May, he’s been slashing .223/ .332/ .360 to go along with 48 hits, seven HRs, and 21 RBIs.
His struggles, accompanied by a few other big contributors on the team, are the primary cause as to why the Padres offensively have been mediocre at best, ranking 21st (730) in hits, 17th in batting average and 27th in home runs. The Padres’ remain confident and adamant the two-time Silver Slugger will find a way to return to his usual explosive play that instills fear to other opposing ball clubs.
Despite the lack of firepower at the plate, Tatis Jr. still has managed to work his way onto the bases, leading the team with 62 runs, 45 BB, 19 stolen bases and a .356 OBP in 332 plate appearances. Six years in the major league, he has 648 hits with 142 home runs, 361 RBIs and 111 stolen bases. Tatis Jr. has also slashed a .277/ .351/ .871.
