LOS ANGELES — LeBron James is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers for a record-setting 23rd NBA season after exercising his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 campaign.
James’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, confirmed the decision to ESPN. The 40-year-old forward, who will become the first player in league history to play 23 seasons, is expected to remain with the Lakers as he monitors the team’s offseason moves.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told ESPN. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.
"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."
James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 assists and 7.2 rebounds in 71 games last season. He remains the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and is 50 games shy of surpassing Robert Parish for the most regular-season games played in league history.
Paul added that the decision was driven by his desire to contend for another championship. James is believed to be closely watching how Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss build the roster this summer.
While James had the option of entering free agency, the move to opt in gives the Lakers clarity heading into a pivotal offseason. The team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Timberwolves in a disappointing gentleman's sweep, and James hinted at contemplating his future following the series.
With his return now confirmed, the focus shifts to how the Lakers will surround him with talent. James has not publicly committed to playing beyond next season, but sources close to him say he remains motivated to compete at the highest level.
James will turn 41 in December.
