LOS ANGELES — Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith has declined his $15.4 million player option for the 2025-26 season and will become an unrestricted free agent, according to multiple reports Sunday.
The 32-year-old forward played a key role for Los Angeles after being acquired in a midseason trade from the Brooklyn Nets for D'Angelo Russell and three future second-round picks.
Finney-Smith appeared in 43 games with the Lakers (20 starts), averaging 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting nearly 40% from three-point range.
Known for his perimeter defense and ability to stretch the floor, Finney-Smith is expected to draw interest from several playoff-contending teams in need of a veteran wing. His departure opens up additional salary cap flexibility for the Lakers, who could now have access to the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception of $14.1 million.
Finney-Smith’s decision comes as the Lakers begin shaping their offseason plans, which include LeBron James opting into his $52.6 million player option earlier this week. L.A. could still look to bring back Finney-Smith using his Bird rights, but his entry into free agency signals he may be seeking a longer-term deal elsewhere.
Free agency officially begins Monday, June 30th, at 3 p.m. PST.
