Jose Pinto #4 of Guatemala and J. Latibeaudiere #15 of Jamaica battle for the ball during the Group Stage - Group C match as part of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup at Dignity Health Sports Park on June 16, 2025 in Carson, California.

Guatemala kicked off their Gold Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Jamaica on Monday, in the second Group clash of the day in Carson.

The match stood in stark contrast to the earlier fixture - not just in intensity, but in atmosphere.

While Panama vs Guadeloupe was defined by a sea of empty seats, 18,262 fans packed Dignity Health Sports Park for the late fixture, the overwhelming majority roaring in support of la Azul y Blanco. Transforming the stadium into a cauldron of noise, they set a passionate tone that the players would match from the opening whistle.

Exploding with relentless energy, Guatemala attacked with gusto and pressed early, feeding off the crowd to try and build momentum - and avoid a similar fate to the 3-0 loss they suffered in World Cup qualifying against the Caribbean side just last week. While Jamaica weathered the initial storm and began to regain control, Guatemala struck against the run of play with a moment of brilliance.

The goal came from a cheeky Darwin Lom backheel assist - nutmegging the defender and slipping Óscar Santis through on goal. Santis made no mistake, whipping an outside-of-the foot finish toward the far post before kissing the badge in celebration - and sending the Guatemalan faithful into raptures.

As the match wore on, Guatemala’s relentless work rate began to wear Jamaica down. The Reggae Boyz grew increasingly frustrated, their appeals to the referee turning to cynical fouls and snatched half-chances by the second half. But Guatemala held firm, their tenacious defending enough to secure the crucial three points.

With both sides still to face group favorites, Panama, the result will have Jamaica fearing an early exit. Whether Steve McClaren’s side can find the spark they need to get out of the group remains to be seen.

As for Guatemala, finishing top of group C suddenly feels like a tangible prospect. For that, however, they’ll likely need the energy at their two remaining games (both in Texas) to match Monday’s. But if it comes anywhere close, advancing to the knockouts should be all but secured.
