CORVALLIS, Ore. — It was quite the ride for the Trojans this year, but after losing back-to-back games to Oregon State in the Corvallis Regional final, their season is officially over.

USC needed just one win to advance to the Super Regional, but the Beavers had other plans. The Trojans suffered a tough 14-1 defeat on Sunday night, followed by a 9-0 shutout loss on Monday afternoon, sealing their postseason exit.

USC’s offense simply couldn’t seem to score on Monday, and it didn’t help that the team grounded into five double plays. You’re not going to win many games scoring one run in 18 innings, let alone in the postseason.

USC left-hander Caden Hunter, who played a key role in helping the Trojans reach the Regional final—earning a four-out save after escaping a jam against Saint Mary’s in the eighth—struggled in his start on Monday. He lasted only three innings, giving up five runs and two walks, though he did manage to strike out three.

Meanwhile, Oregon State’s offense was clicking on all cylinders on Monday. The Beavers scored in four of the first five innings and were up 6-0 heading into the sixth. They sealed the win with three more runs in the eighth, cruising to a 9-0 victory.

Although this wasn’t the desired result for USC, the team has nothing to be ashamed of. Not only did the Trojans make their first postseason appearance since 2015, but they also put together a strong regular season that included a dominant stretch of eight consecutive series victories—something the program hadn’t achieved since 1978. They also recorded their most wins in a single season since 2015.

USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz also reached 102 wins in his third season as the program’s coach this year, making him only the second coach in USC history to reach more than 100 wins in three seasons.

Additionally, three USC players were named to the All-Corvallis Regional Team: pitcher Caden Aoki, outfielder Jack Besser, and infielder Abbrie Covarrubias.

There’s no doubt USC hoped to make an even deeper postseason run, but the program made significant progress this year. It will be interesting to see what lessons the team takes from this season and how they build on them next year.
