SAN FRANCISCO -- Manny Machado’s late-inning heroics wills the Padres to a 3-2 comeback victory in extra innings against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.
The Padres (35-24) offense was nowhere to be found for eight straight innings, but better late than ever as they drew two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the ninth-inning off closer Camilo Doval. This set the table for every ball-player's dream; bases loaded with two outs in the ninth.
There was no better man for the job than Machado (.315 BA, 869 OPS). The third baseman went and dug out a slider for a two-RBI single to tie the game 2-2 and send the game to extra innings for the second consecutive night.

Despite the offensive struggles for the Friars throughout the game, Machado refused to get out. Machado went 4/4 with two RBI’s and a walk. The future hall-of-famer now hits .350 with the bases loaded in his career.
“Manny’s done a lot, his at-bats were fantastic,” said Manager Mike Shildt. “When he’s in a good spot and got that nice, easy stroke going, just putting a good swing on the baseball consistently, watch out.”
Second baseman Jake Cronenworth kept the momentum going in the tenth, first-pitch swinging on an inside-cutter to score Jackson Merrill to take a 3-2 lead.

On a night when everyone knew the Padres bullpen was going to be short, relievers Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.00 ERA) and Sean Reynolds (0-1, 4.60) held it down. The young arms combined for two earned runs allowed, six hits and four strikeouts in eight innings pitched.
“Burger got through five and it was huge. We had a length guy behind him with Reynolds and he went out and was fantastic,” said Shildt. “Three innings- pitched his tail off, came in and gave the boys a jolt at the end of the eighth.”
Reliever Jeremiah Estrada (2 SVs, 2.36 ERA) entered in the tenth on short rest and put the Giants away to complete the late-inning comeback.
“The will to win across the board. All guys just dedicated to the bottom line, figuring out a way to get a win,” said Shildt. “It just reinforces who we are.”
Pinch hitter Brandon Lockridge was also big for the San Diego offense tonight, going 2/2 with a run scored.
The Friars keep finding ways to win, coming alive late against a stingy Giants bullpen to snag game two away in another extra-innings victory. They will see San Francisco (33-38) again for game three of the four-game series Wednesday, at 6:45 p.m.
