EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The NFL has announced that the Los Angeles Chargers will host the second-ever NFL regular season game in São Paulo, Brazil, during the 2025 season.
It will be a week 1 matchup on Friday, September 5th, at Corinthians Arena, home to SC Corinthians, which fits 47,252 fans.
Jim Harbaugh, Justin Herbert, Derwin James and the Chargers are headed to international waters. It is a good opportunity to grow the fanbase in a new international landscape like Brazil.
“It’s an honor to once again represent the NFL on an international stage,” said Chargers President of Business Operations A.G. Spanos in a press release. “It’s also a tremendous opportunity to help grow the game and bring the Chargers brand to millions of sports fans across Brazil and Latin America. One of the great countries of the world, Brazil is as vibrant, dynamic and culturally diverse as anywhere on the planet, and we cannot wait to experience the warmth and passion of its people during our visit.”
There is no opponent yet, but the Chargers are scheduled to face the Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, and Houston Texans.
The interesting part of the Chargers' home schedule is that two opponents, the Steelers and Colts, will already be playing in Europe, and the Eagles will open the 2025 season at home on Thursday Night.
The rematch against the Texans would be interesting, especially since they are knocking them out of the playoffs. There are also divisional opponents. There is a lot to choose from by the NFL.
Any of the three division games are interesting, but taking on Jayden Daniels, JJ McCarthy, or CJ Stroud in Brazil has a unique dynamic, and adding Herbert to the mix adds another dimension.
The Philadelphia Eagles 2024 season started in Brazil against the Green Bay Packers and ended in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
This will be the Chargers' first international trip since November 2019, when they faced the Kansas City Chiefs in Mexico City during Patrick Mahomes's first season as the starting quarterback.
The opponent will be named later, but the Chargers are starting the season in Brazil with an eye on ending it in San Francisco in February.
