EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The Los Angeles Kings extended Erik Portillo’s contract this Sunday morning.

Portillo, who has spent the past season with the Kings' AHL affiliate, signed a three-year contract worth $783,000 annually.

The Swedish native played in 39 games last season, garnering 24 wins and a .918 save percentage for the Reign.

He previously played three seasons for the University of Michigan, where he built a solid resume. His 60-22 record and .917 save percentage made him one of the top goalies in the league.

Portillo also helped Sweden win a bronze medal in the 2020 IIHF Junior Championships.

He has now been added to the list of goaltenders fighting for a starting spot between the pipes in LA. His main competition will be with Phoenix Copley and second-round draft pick Carter George.

Copley, George and Portillo are all young players looking to prove themselves. However, at least one of the three must drop to the AHL for more development.

Portillo has yet to get minutes in the NHL, but he is an excellent option for the team if they get in a bind.
