The Padres fell to the Rockies Sunday afternoon with a final score of 3-2.
The Rockies (46-79) continued their dominance over San Diego (70-55) this season, ending the season series with a 8-5 record over the Friars.
The Padres lineup was quiet, despite their aggressiveness. Rockies starting pitcher Bradley Blalock was changing speeds throughout his entire outing, getting weak contact and keeping the San Diego offense guessing.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, right fielder David Peralta (.269 BA, 769 OPS) shortened up on an outside pitch to bring in center fielder Jackson Merrill for an RBI double. A hit-and-run was called and Merill and Peralta successfully executed it to tie the game at one.
Starter Joe Musgrove had great control of the zone, finishing his day with six strikeouts and one earned run in 4 ⅓ innings pitched. Musgrove (3-4, 4.97 ERA) was attacking the top of the zone and working his slider away, freezing the Rockies lineup multiple times.
The Rockies put up two runs in the sixth off reliever Bryan Hoeing to take a 3-1 lead. San Diego came within one run after a home run from third baseman Manny Machado, his 19th of the year. Machado (.271 BA, .771 OPS) kept his momentum from yesterday going, turning on an inside slider to give the Friars some late-inning hope.
The Padres failed to make their comeback despite opportunities. The San Diego offense left nine runners on base and went 0-4 with runners in scoring position.
The Padres look to bounce back from the series loss Monday against the Minnesota Twins at 6:40 pm.
Update on Kim
Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim went down in the third inning diving back to first base from a pickoff attempt. Kim exited the game clutching his shoulder in obvious pain.
The Padres are calling Kim’s injury a jammed shoulder and his current return is unknown. Kim had finally started to get his bat going, slashing .367 over his last 10 games.
