The Angels starting pitching will again have to overcome more adversity as right-hander Jose Soriano is headed to the team's injured list because of arm fatigue.

In Friday night's 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves, Soriano threw in 3 1/3 innings, throwing 76 pitches.

Angels manager Ron Washington said he noticed Soriano's arm fatigue when his velocity started to decline throughout the game.

"My eyes told me he was tired by the third inning," Washington said. "So when we got to the (fourth inning) he was really tired.

"I was taking him out so he didn't hurt himself. Because he was gonna gut it out. He didn't have to gut it out."

The Angels rotation has been decimated by injuries and subpar play. The team's opening day starter Patrick Sandoval recently had his season come to an end after having Tommy John Surgery in June

Chase Silseth was in the opening-day rotation but found his name on the injured list after two starts due to elbow inflammation. Once Silseth was eligible to come off the IL, he was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Reid Detmers, who was brilliant in April, was optioned to Triple-A on June 2 after a disappointing month of May.

On Friday night in Sacramento, Detmers had a dominant performance for the Bees. He lasted eight innings and gave up three hits with one run. If he can continue that type of success in the minors, his name could be called back soon.

Rendon day-to-day

After exiting Friday night's game in the fourth inning, Anthony Rendon is listed as day-to-day for the Angels after being hit by a pitch in the second inning.

"He's feeling better. This was (me) giving him the day off. Hopefully I can get him back out there." Washington said.

Rendon's time with the Angels has not been sunshine and flowers since he signed a seven-year $245 million deal following the 2019 season. He has had multiple time extensive trips on the IL and has only played in 241 games over the last five years.

This season has been his hardest, owning a .235 batting average, .593 OPS, six RBIs and zero home runs.

López makes 1st start

Jack López was called up to the Angels roster Thursday after Willie Calhoun was designated for assignment.

López has been with the Angels organization since 2023. He is a utility player who can play second base, third base, shortstop, and the outfield.

On Friday night, López's Angels debut began after taking over second base for Michael Stefanic in the eighth inning. Playing in just two innings, he saw the ball come to him twice.

"I just like to get these guys in the game when they get up here. Sometimes I can get them in there the first day. But I gotta get them in that second day." Washington said.

Following the move to designate Calhoun for assignment, he is now back in the Angels organization and has been outrighted to Triple-A.
