LOS ANGELES -- Last year, Dearica Hamby started the 2023 WNBA campaign two months removed from giving birth to her son, Legend.
This year, she is now a three-time all-star. The Sparks forward was announced to the team on Tuesday night. She will be playing in the All-Star game against Team USA at Footprint Center in Phoenix. The game will take place on Saturday, June 20th.
“Being selected to the All-Star team is a tremendous honor and I’m excited to head to Phoenix to compete,” said Hamby. “This points to the hard work that I’ve put in during the offseason and in games so far, but it’s also thanks to my great teammates and coaches who have trusted me in a leadership role with our team.”
Hamby is having a tremendous season for the Sparks. She leads the league in double-doubles with 12. And entering Tuesday, Hamby was averaging 18.4 points (9th best in the league), 10.3 rebounds (3rd), 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals (Top 15). She’s also shooting .450 from three, which is good for third in the league.
Hamby also made the All-Star team in 2021 and 2022 as a member of the Las Vegas Aces. She was traded to the Sparks before the 2023 season after spending eight seasons with the San Antonio Silver Stars/Las Vegas Aces.
The newly-minted all-star Hamby and the Sparks lost their eighth straight game after a heartbreaking loss to the Mystics. They play next on Friday against Hamby’s former team, the Aces.
