Live Draft Tracker - Round 5

No. 136 Overall — Colorado Rockies

Selection: Tyler Putnam

Position/School: RHP, Battle HS (MO)

Analysis: TBD

No. 137 Overall — Chicago White Sox

Selection: Cal Scolari

Position/School: RHP, Oregon

Analysis: TBD

No. 138 Overall — Washington Nationals

Selection: Daniel Cuvet

Position/School: 3B, Miami

Analysis:

Cuvet has illustrious power upside dating back to his Florida prep days where he got popped by Pittsburgh as an "atta boy" in the 17th in 2023, but instead stayed in state for school where he logged his name into the Miami record books over three years and was tracking towards his best year as a junior before a stress fracture in his back ended his season prematurely. A right-handed hitter, he is a short loader with a lower handset direct into a rubber band, exploding with a long and loose barrel that covers the whole zone. Notably physical, he has high-end bat speed paired with incredible strength at the point of contact helping give him 70 raw power that plays to all fields. An aggressive hitter, he had steadily progressive discipline and decision-making markers that indicated a better than 40 hit tool; including an impressive wood bat track record. He's likely to always be a swing-and-miss candidate due to the length in the swing and necessary body control for his long levers, but the initial foundation for a high-ISO slugger who peaks in the middle-of-the-order is present. Defensively, he is fine at the hot corner with a strong and accurate arm behind them, though he will have to stay with the pacing of the game as he gets deeper into development to stick and not swing to a less-premium corner. There are some medical markers and hit tool concerns that may cause stir and variable projection, but the offensive upside of a middle-of-the-order hitter who could slug 30+ home runs will carry the profile into serious prospect clout.

No. 139 Overall — Minnesota Twins

Selection: Steele Murdock

Position/School: RHP, UC San Diego

Analysis:

Murdock took a loud summer in the Cape Cod into Friday night duties for San Diego where he held his own against the likes of Logan Reddemann and Jackson Flora. His fastball sits 92-95 and he can find 97-99 at random gassed up moments, with good life in the zone but his lack of feel to locate left a few too many cookies. His mid 80s slider is an out pitch with tight, vertical break, flashing plus. He'll flip over an occasional show me curve in the upper 70s and a firm mid 80s changeup, both fringy at best at current. He has an effortful delivery with a whippy quick arm that can diminish his control and command, which fall below-average and create relief risk and projection. He has a pure power arsenal and will have to improve how to land it to get to his notable relief upside, with some ninth-inning projection.

No. 140 Overall — Pittsburgh Pirates

Selection: Ryan Marohn

Position/School: LHP, North Carolina State

Analysis:

Marohn was a touted Virginia prep who got popped by Cleveland in the 20th in 2023, but landed on campus in Raleigh where he became a three-year starter with a strong performance track record, though he missed scattered time in his draft-eligible season with a flurry of general soreness injuries. His fastball sits 90-93 and grabs 95 while playing up with his ability to spot it and create life at the top of the zone. He can be north-south dominant living a bit on the fastball, but will sell an active changeup with deadening life in the low to mid 80's, while flashing plus as a true out pitch. He has a pair of breakers with a low 80's slider with prototypical shape, and a loopier upper 70's curveball, with both being change-of-pace and differing shape offerings. He is a solid on-mound athlete who has a fluid, repeatable delivery that helps him fill the zone and locate with ease. There is pitchability and four pitches that create a rotation projection, while some physical/velocity gains could add a half grade to his back-of-the-rotation projection.

No. 141 Overall — Los Angeles Angels

Selection: Jaxon Willits

Position/School: SS, Oklahoma

Analysis:

Willits has been the starting shortstop at Oklahoma since arriving on campus with the only threat of losing that job being the potential of his younger brother stealing it away, but alas, he went first overall in 2025 taking away a potentially challenging decision for their father, who is an associate coach and former big-leaguer. A switch-hitter -- who is a bit more fluid from the left side -- he is content on making contact to all fields. He can cut off his extension and doesn't swing with much intent with a flatter plane, but even with a shift to swinging harder, wouldn't project for much power; while showing average raw and seeing the hit tool be the standout. There is some polish in his decision making, staying in the zone with swing decisions and waiting out his pitch to drive to the gaps. A quicker runner underway, he has short burst speed and is about an above-average runner who is an instinctual base stealer and will take the extra bag with frequency. The same quick feet help him in the middle infield where he has fine actions and average arm strength that should allow him to move around the infield and stay at shortstop long enough to profile as his listed position at peak. Whether it is by lazy nature or not, the overall package and look is very similar to a dirt version of his father who played parts of six seasons as a fourth outfielder, and the outcome for Jaxon should probably be superior by a margin; though on the dirt and with at least one home run in the bigs at some point. There's some high-floor utility characteristics that should play into his outcome.

No. 142 Overall — Baltimore Orioles

Selection: Jimmy Anderson

Position/School: SS, Heartland JC (IL)

Analysis:

Anderson got popped by Baltimore in the 19th-round last year, but opted to return to Heartland JC (Ill.) where he continued putting up video game numbers and upping his stock while showing strength gains. A righthanded hitter, he has a natural coil and spring load into a big rubber band before firing with a line drive cut. He swings with some violence and will get under the ball a bit too often, but his ability to get the ball airborne to his pull side gives some faith into tapping into his average raw power with production similar. The swing itself may see some struggles against superior arms, though his approach is to keep the offense running with some balance. Defensively, he should see his development start at shortstop where he is a fair defender with solid foot speed and arm strength, though not as much twitchy athleticism as the prototypical pro shortstop which likely leads to a future at second or third base. There are tools here to see a future everyday infielder, though it will come with some development attention to the swing and getting to the upside. He is committed to Kentucky if he opts not to sign, where he would be a junior with limited leverage as a third-time draftee.

No. 143 Overall — Athletics

Selection: Alex Hernandez

Position/School: 3B, Georgia Tech

Analysis:

Hernandez was a touted two-way Georgia prep who made it to campus at Georgia Tech and had a loud freshman year that earned him ACC FOY honors, and he backed it up with a louder sophomore-eligible season as one of the top offensive producers for one of the top offenses all spring. A right-handed hitter, he has a prototypical power swing with strength behind a longer barrel and steep plane that he has worked to shorten up and stay more compact with over the spring. He has notable strength scattered throughout his 6-foot-2 frame and high-end bat speed that helps him tap into his plus raw power and drive the ball to all fields, with a tendency to mistakenly inside-out pitches 300-400 feet the other way. While it is power-over-hit, there is enough semblance of decision making and adjustments to see a fringy, approach-based hit tool come around. He swings-and-misses in-zone at a clip that needs to come down, while breakers can create chase, but there are progressive markers indicating improvements in each category and enough chance to hit to get to his power upside. It may be a variable hit tool through-and-through, but enough feel to believe it won't be problematic in development. He has swung around the field over his college career, mixing time between all non-premium homes with no real location to call his defensive home. He has a plus arm that helped make him a touted pitching prospect out of high school that could fit in right field or third base where he's seen some time, but he is a fringy defender overall at both positions and doesn't seem to have the foot speed to handle second base; leading to a potential emergency left fielder or first base landing spot. A lot up in the air on the defense. If all falls apart, the arm talent is worth mentioning a mound future as an emergency fallback where he's been up to the mid 90's with a good breaker which helped him in six short relief stints in college. There is power upside here and enough hit tool to believe in getting to it and building a solid big-league future, though he'll need to find a real defensive home.

No. 144 Overall — Atlanta Braves

Selection: Wil Libbert

Position/School: LHP, Mississippi

Analysis:

Libbert was a touted Missouri prep who saw a fluky incident turn into Tommy John surgery and a late start to his collegiate career that led to a transfer from Missouri to Ole Miss and a swing role while revamping some pitch shapes and mechanics. His fastball sits 95-96 and will touch 98, while the liveliness of the heater has improved but still needs fine tuning to be more than a power graded plus fastball. Touching up his arm side breakers, he has added a mid 80's cutter as a bridge pitch (with good initial returns) between his natural fastball and low 80's slider that will flash above-average with some slurve tendencies. His changeup is inconsistent but could turn into a fair third or fourth pitch. He's a relatively easy mover on the mound with a simplistic delivery that he has reworked to be more compact and have a higher arm slot to help create some new angles and pitch designs; though the results -- and particularly the command -- haven't come as quickly as anticipated leading to more emphasis on relief risk. There's plenty of arm talent here with quality pure stuff, but without a true weapon against right handers and middling or fringy control, he may become a power reliever from the left side who gets to some high-leverage upside.

No. 145 Overall — Tampa Bay Rays

Selection: Owen Kramkowski

Position/School: RHP, Arizona

Analysis: TBD

No. 146 Overall — St. Louis Cardinals

Selection: Cal Randall

Position/School: RHP, UCLA

Analysis:

Randall possesses one of the best heaters in the class. His fastball made a jump this spring in velocity terms, going from sitting 95-97 to firmly sitting 98-99 and grabbing 101; and while the raw velocity alone make it a plus pitch, it has loads of life at the top of the zone and he creates elite extension getting the ball to the plate in a bigger hurry than it already does making it a near 80 heater. His secondaries are more fringy and power based with a firm upper 80s changeup and short upper 80s cut/slider. He is an explosive mover on the mound who gets down with excellence with enough delivery and athletic markers to have some starter development fans; but those dwindled as his control remained below-average with little feel to improve aside from overpowering in the zone. He will have to prove he's more than a one trick pony but the fastball will get him to the bigs in relief, and in a hurry, with clear ninth inning upside.

No. 147 Overall — Miami Marlins

Selection: Trey Beard

Position/School: LHP, Florida State

Analysis:

Beard is a metrically enticing southpaw who creates rarely seen angles that helped him to three years of solid rotation performance, his final coming with Florida State. His fastball sits 90-91 and gets to 95 but plays up heavily due to the angle he creates from an extreme over-the-top release that brings near-elite vertical break, sitting between 20-25 inches and peaking at 27'' IVB. The arm angle and arm speed also help create incredible shape and velocity separation with his changeup which falls off the table in the mid-to-upper 70's, making it a plus offering with similarly unique traits to the heater. He has blended a pair of breaking balls over the years with a high-arching curveball in the mid 70's and a slider in a slightly higher velocity bucket that is more of a top-down breaker; with both breaking balls grading out fairly. He has done a good job of filling the zone and should be an average or better strike thrower with physical gains helping him to repeatability. His arm slot and release point gives him rarely seen angles from the left side, arguably only seen from Matthew Liberatore though with differing power. With four pitches, one being a solid out pitch, an ability to repeat with track record, there is notable rotation upside here in the direction of a No. 3/4 divide, and his angles will make him an alluring prospect for all development groups who will want to work with and tap into.

No. 148 Overall — Arizona Diamondbacks

Selection: LJ Mercurius

Position/School: RHP, Oklahoma

Analysis: TBD

No. 149 Overall — Texas Rangers

Selection: Michael Anderson Jr.

Position/School: TWP, Penn State

Analysis: TBD

No. 150 Overall — San Francisco Giants

Selection: Luke Nixon

Position/School: 2B, North Carolina State

Analysis:

Nixon is a smaller, hitterish infielder who has been a table-setter for NC State since arriving on campus. A left-handed hitter, he has a simple line drive swing that he can manipulate to shoot the ball to all fields. His size limits his punch in the box and though he'll sneak a few balls out pull side, it is well below-average power projection. An aggressive hitter, he eased up on some swing decisions this spring to show a more rounded decision making, though he will still go out of the zone for contact; and despite the chase, he is a rare swing-and-miss candidate. He is an average runner with some quick-burst energy that helps him range well at second where his defensive home will likely sit. He is the son of former 12-year big-leaguer Trot. While he doesn't possess an impact tool, it's an advanced feel to hit, run and field giving him a relatively high-floor that should push him through development quickly.

No. 151 Overall — Kansas City Royals

Selection: Ethan McElvain

Position/School: LHP, Arkansas

Analysis:

McElvain was a touted Nashville-based prep who stayed in town for college at Vanderbilt where he split duties for two years before transferring to Arkansas for his draft eligible season where he established himself as one of the top lefty relievers in the nation. His fastball has special traits, sitting 93-96 and touching 98 in shorter stints, playing up with elite carry as a bat missing weapon throughout the zone, particularly on the upper rail. He mostly scrapped his softer breaking balls this past spring in lieu for a harder cutter in the upper 80's upwards of 91-92 with solid life. He has shown some feel for an upper 70's downer curveball in the past; while his low 80's slider has essentially just turned into his cutter that is an above-average offering. He also had a changeup in the past, but it is long distanced from his current state. His delivery was cleaned up a bit this past spring with a more compact arm stroke from a higher release, which enhanced his strike throwing substantially, though it remains fringy control. While he currently show two potentially plus pitches with fringy command, teams could lean back to getting him to a third or fourth or fifth offering and into a starter development; though his most likely outcome will be as a high-tempo reliever with leverage upside with a Kenny Powers aptitude. His brother Chris is a Blue Jays rotation prospect.

No. 152 Overall — New York Mets

Selection: Luke McNeillie

Position/School: RHP, Florida

Analysis: TBD

No. 153 Overall — Houston Astros

Selection: Gavin Eddy

Position/School: RHP, California

Analysis: TBD

No. 154 Overall — Cincinnati Reds

Selection: Dylan Bowen

Position/School: SS, Hanover Central HS

Analysis: TBD

No. 155 Overall — Cleveland Guardians

Selection: Lucas Moore

Position/School: OF, Louisville

Analysis:

Moore was Team USA's center fielder over the summer after leading Division-1 in stolen bags and continued to show his speed and defensive traits during his draft-eligible season, though with his bat taking a minor step backwards. A lefthanded hitter, he has a slash-and-dash cut that saw more line drive tendencies this spring causing some mixed opinions on what has been plus contact skills. Power is not part of his game with maybe 30-raw and a swing, approach and frame that doesn't indicate more is to come. A selective hitter, he saw more whiffs this spring adding to the questions about if a swing alteration may be hindering his contact skills. A borderline 80 runner, he is an aggressive base stealer who has a constant green light and adds value on the bases. The overall package screams leadoff future. His 7/8 speed is used well on the basepaths and on the grass where he is a super rangy defender in center field who tracks everything with ease and closes at an excellent rate; while his feel for the position make him a plus defender already and potential impact glove. The lack of impact with the bat causes some ceiling concerns but the contact, speed and glove create a high-floor and could settle into a strong side platoon leadoff future.

No. 156 Overall — Boston Red Sox

Selection: Lucas Davenport

Position/School: RHP, Baylor

Analysis: TBD

No. 157 Overall — San Diego Padres

Selection: James Guyette

Position/School: RHP, Kansas State

Analysis: TBD

No. 158 Overall — Detroit Tigers

Selection: Declan Dahl

Position/School: RHP, Louisiana Tech

Analysis: TBD

No. 159 Overall — Chicago Cubs

Selection: Dylan Blomker

Position/School: RHP, La Cueva HS (NM)

Analysis: TBD

No. 160 Overall — New York Yankees

Selection: Bear Harrison

Position/School: C, Texas A&M

Analysis: TBD

No. 161 Overall — Philadelphia Phillies

Selection: Will Gasparino

Position/School: OF, UCLA

Analysis:

Gasparino was a touted prep who landed at Texas for two seasons before heading home to UCLA via the portal where he unlocked a new gear with the bat while still showing his athletic tools. A righthanded hitter, he has gone through plenty of tweaks to better engage his long levers with a frame quite similar to Kawhi Leonard and found some more athletic freedom in the box this spring that helped his hit tool grab a full grade or better. His size and leverage assist in getting to his plus-plus raw power with ease with power to all fields and moonshots when pulling the ball and potential for 30+ seasons as the hit tool and approach approve. His levers allow him to hit balls well out of the zone and he will expand to drive the ball, but most believe just because he has the current ability doesn't mean he will against next level pitching; and his swing gains length as his levers come through the operation creating plenty of swing-and-miss. How much body and swing control he gains through development will dictate what kind of upside he really gets to but even with a fringe hit tool there is impact. A plus flatline runner, he mans center field with ease and shows impressive athleticism allowing him to make acrobatic adjustments most players his size can't; leading to a projected center field future, potentially as an impact defender. He is one of the more polarizing players in the class due to the levers and size but the upside is notable here and he is beloved by scouts for his makeup and baseball aptitude. He is the son of Los Angeles Dodgers assistant general manager Billy.

No. 162 Overall — Seattle Mariners

Selection: Hayden Yost

Position/School: OF, Florida

Analysis: TBD

No. 163 Overall — Milwaukee Brewers

Selection: Aidan Knaak

Position/School: RHP, Clemson

Analysis: TBD

No. 164 Overall — Toronto Blue Jays

Selection: Nolan Higgins

Position/School: RHP, Michigan State

Analysis: TBD

Round 6

No. 165 Overall — Colorado Rockies

Selection: Garrett Lambert

Position/School: RHP, Mercer

Analysis: TBD

No. 166 Overall — Chicago White Sox

Selection: Alex Weingartner

Position/School: OF, St. Augustine Prep HS (NJ)

Analysis:

Weingartner is a high-end prep athlete who went from being a projectable power pitcher to becoming an enticing position player with impact tools over the course of the winter and spring. There is little argument that he is an 80-runner in a straight line and his speed will create havoc on the base paths and in the field. He has played some shortstop and his quick burst and plus arm may allow him to stick on the left side dirt but he can man center field well and control the game with his arm from the grass just as well. For as solid an athlete he is, he can get rigid in the box and has length in his load and swing. When his timing and pacing is on, he can find the barrel with some explosiveness and tap into his physicality and bat speed. His swing is conducive to getting to his power; so as long as his hit tool stays anywhere above a 40, he should have power-speed impact offensively as a double-digit home run and stolen base producer. On the mound, he has some power arm upside, sitting 92-94 with his fastball that hits 96. There is some feel to spin a pair of breaking balls and a changeup in the bag giving him four pitches, though his general control is well below-average and only athletic markers as indicators of improving. Regardless, there is two-way fallback and the mound is not a forgone end game. You can dream heavily on the athleticism and on impactful speed and power, though it will take patience to get to the final product. He is committed to Penn State, where his brother played and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth round in 2025.

No. 167 Overall — Washington Nationals

Selection: Cooper Allen

Position/School: RHP, UNC Wilmington

Analysis: TBD

No. 168 Overall — Minnesota Twins

Selection: Ethan Lay

Position/School: RHP, Sacramento State

Analysis: TBD

No. 169 Overall — Pittsburgh Pirates

Selection: Tyler Fay

Position/School: RHP, Alabama

Analysis: TBD

No. 170 Overall — Los Angeles Angels

Selection: Justin Byrd

Position/School: RHP, Georgia

Analysis: TBD

No. 171 Overall — Baltimore Orioles

Selection: Zane Adams

Position/School: LHP, Alabama

Analysis:

Adams has been a known pitchability commodity for some time now, and had some early day two run last spring but pulled his name from the card and returned to Alabama posting the best year of his three as a full-time rotation man. His fastball saw a nice uptick this spring, going from the low 90's to sitting 92-94 and touching 96 with some late armside life. His cambio is arguably his best secondary as a big separator from the heat, about 10-15 mph gap, on a linear line that he can steal strikes with and alter pace. His upper 70's 12-6 curveball can miss bats and should give him a second average off-speed, while he has recently added a cut-slide piece with fair initial manipulation markers and bridge between his fastball and other secondaries. An easy operator on the mound, he has solid pace and feel to repeat his delivery aiding to quality strike throwing; though he was nationally exposed (Eduardo Perez, ESPN) for tipping his pitches in the College World Series, so there could be some mechanical tweaks ahead. While he doesn't possess a real above-average bat-missing offering, he has a trio of average pitches and solid feel to locate which should give him a rotation future at the next level and backend rotation upside.

No. 172 Overall — Athletics

Selection: Alex Sosa

Position/School: C, Miami

Analysis:

Sosa was a touted Florida prep who spent two years at NC State before transferring to Miami as a bat-first backstop. A left-handed hitter, he has a simple operation with a quick line drive stroke that has become more balanced over the spring. He has solid bat speed with a lofty bat path and is strong in his lower half, helping him tap into his average or better power that should translate to high-teen or 20+ annual over-the-fencers at his peak. There are progressive markers to cutting down his swing-and-miss, but not enough to believe whiffs won't be a part of his game with hopes of high walk rates countering and completing a power-over-hit profile that fits the back third of a lineup. He is a fine defender behind the plate who does everything well but not great, with quiet hands and some mobility, though his fringy arm may limit his ability to control the game from a defensive perspective. He should stick behind the plate giving him positional value with the bat, while he has enough power from the strong side of a platoon to get some daily reps at his peaks and likely ride the pine against southpaws.

No. 173 Overall — Atlanta Braves

Selection: Tyson Grulkowski

Position/School: RHP, Muskego HS (WI)

Analysis: TBD

No. 174 Overall — Tampa Bay Rays

Selection: Kyle Johnson

Position/School: LHP, Virginia

Analysis:

Johnson is a standout two-way that was part of the seven player exodus that followed Chris Pollard from Duke to Virginia, with plenty of upside on the mound. His fastball sits 91-94 and touches 98 with good zip through the zone. He can manipulate the shape of a breaking ball with improvements on separating break on his slider and curveball that both sit in the upper 70's and adding some power to his slider to turn it into a shorter cutter in the upper 80's. His changeup may be the best of his secondaries as a mid 80's cambio with quality armside action. He is a strong on-mound athlete who has shown some feel to repeating which are markers to see improved control and command as he places a focus on pitching only. He has a deceptive, compact delivery with explosive drive. As a hitter, he has a stiff setup and swing that is solely geared for damage that creates impressive hard contact, but unsustainable swing-and-miss, while he is a fair defensive outfielder with a strong arm. His future is on the mound with teams banking on a four-pitch mix and on-mound athleticism to see a notable arm upside that has a non-zero rotation outocme as he focuses solely on pitching at the next level.

No. 175 Overall — St. Louis Cardinals

Selection: Owen Henne

Position/School: SS, Seton Hill

Analysis: TBD

No. 176 Overall — Miami Marlins

Selection: Cole Selvig

Position/School: RHP, Minnesota

Analysis: TBD

No. 177 Overall — Arizona Diamondbacks

Selection: Micah Worley

Position/School: LHP, SUNY Stony Brook

Analysis:

Worley is a tall and physical on-mound project that went from a low-inning count transfer from Modesto JC (Cal.) to Stony Brook's Friday starter this spring in his draft-eligible. His fastball sits in the low 90's throughout workloads but will sit 92-95 in short outings and has peaked at 98. The pitch plays up due to its life at the top of the zone and carry coming from a higher 3/4 release. He throws his breaking ball pairing with confidence, with a tight slider with middling sweep in the low-to-mid 80's and a softer vertical curve in the upper 70's. He also has a changeup in the bag, though it is rarely utilized. His delivery traits give him some separation in projection, with a low-effort delivery that he repeats well and can slow down the pacing on to stay on a line, helping him to near-average generalized control. He gets down the mound well and has plenty of arm talent projection despite being near his physical caps. The current state is likely to be far-removed from the future state, while his fastball-curveball combination create some relief floor, the delivery and mechanical quirks paired with his size make him an enticing starter project.

No. 178 Overall — Texas Rangers

Selection: Aidan Brainard

Position/School: RHP, Nevada

Analysis: TBD

No. 179 Overall — San Francisco Giants

Selection: Eric Nachtsheim

Position/School: RHP, McNeese State

Analysis: TBD

No. 180 Overall — Kansas City Royals

Selection: Justin LeGuernic

Position/School: LHP, Clemson

Analysis:

Leguernic is a low slinging power armed southpaw with three years track record of missing bats in relief with Clemson. His fastball has unique traits while sitting 93-96 with some ability to hold velocity deep into outings. He fires from a lower 3/4 slot which helps him create armside life, while he can get behind the ball and create notable carry, adding a half grade to the natural velocity and life as a plus heater. He pairs the heat with a big power sweeper in the mid 80's that darts across the zone and dives below the zone as a second plus offering to his arsenal. He will lob in an occasional firm changeup to right-handers, but it is a distant third offering. He has a high-tempo delivery that has fluidity through the operation but he can get loose with his release creating some fringy control. While his starting track record is limited, there is projection in the frame and at least signs of a three-pitch arsenal to squint a starter development with a high-leverage relief outcome, letting his two plus pitches play late in games.

No. 181 Overall — New York Mets

Selection: Alex Petrovic

Position/School: RHP, Auburn

Analysis: TBD

No. 182 Overall — Houston Astros

Selection: Michael Addari

Position/School: RHP, Illinois State

Analysis: TBD

No. 183 Overall — Cincinnati Reds

Selection: Duncan Marsten

Position/School: RHP, Wake Forest

Analysis: TBD

No. 184 Overall — Cleveland Guardians

Selection: Deiten Lachance

Position/School: C, Oklahoma

Analysis:

Lachance is a moose-sized, Canadian-born backstop with incredible power who earned a starting role at Oklahoma this spring after two years with McLennan CC (Tex.). A right-handed hitter, he has a noisy, rhythmic load that has seen some alterations over the past few years; though while keeping consistent ever-moving pumps into an explosive rip. He has incredible hand speed and wrist strength that helps him adjust on the fly and give a little more faith to his feel to hit, which simmers around fringy. He has excellent bat speed paired with strength scattered throughout his 6-foot-5, 230-pound frame which in turn creates above-average to plus raw power; though his ability to get to it came in question with a flatter bat path -- though it must be noted, he hit 15 home runs in his final 28 games after going homerless in his first 31. He is aggressive in the box and has a swing meant for damage which has led to plenty of chase and swing-and-miss, though the frame and power carry the offensive profile here. Defensively, he is a good receiver with a plus arm that controls the running game with ease. His size can create some lateral flaws as opposed to anything longitudical (not a word), if we're referring to north-south-east-west, but not enough to believe he can't stick at the position long term. The physical tools give him notable upside where he could be a power-hitting backstop who gets frequent playing time at a premium home during his peaks and floating a variable 50-grade after early development/performance wouldn't be surprising.

No. 185 Overall — Boston Red Sox

Selection: Brett Lanman

Position/School: LHP, Abilene Christian

Analysis:

Lanman has been one of the more reliable arms in the WAC where he has performed well as a three-year starter for Abilene Christian. His fastball sits in the low 90's but plays up due to it's notable ride with 19" IVB and how quickly it gets on hitters thanks to elite extension. While none of his secondaries grade out heavily as true out pitches, he creates differing shapes with a low 80's cutter-slider variance, a middling changeup in the same velocity bucket, and vertical curve in the upper 70's; giving him shapes in all four directions. He has a simple delivery with a compact arm stroke helping him to near-average control, and gets down the mound as well as anyone with elite extension, upwards of 7 feet. He has an impressive frame at 6-foot-5 and 230+ pounds of strength, making him a prime candidate to eat innings where he can develop a more true out pitch from his secondaries. There's tools to see an inning-eating, backend rotation arm, and you don't have to squint too hard.

No. 186 Overall — San Diego Padres

Selection: Nu'u Contrades

Position/School: SS, Arizona State

Analysis:

Contrades has been in prospect circles for some time as a touted Hawaiian-prep who landed in Tempe and has been a performer for the last two years while seeing his stock rise with a power uptick this spring as a redshirt-junior. He has a twitchy, rhythmic operation from the right side where it looks like he just pumped a Red Bull and is ready to explode, though with the jittery looking setup, he's regularly on time and in a strong hitting posture when he swings, which is frequent, and makes contact, which is also frequent. He's started to pull the ball in the air more and is tapping into some of his compact strength, with his metrics and over-fence numbers seeing a heavy climb and now grading out as fringe or better projection. He has a hyper aggressive approach and swings early-and-often; and with some balance to the approach and improved pitch selection, he could be a well-rounded hitter who hits for average and some pop. The bat will be the carrying tool as he is a high-energy runner and defender (at second and third base) who likes to steal bases and get to the ball in a hurry; though the run, glove and arm are mostly average to a hair better. His stock will take a hit due to being on the elder side of the junior class at 22-years-old but the tools and playing style create an archetype of a future utility who swings around the dirt outside of shortstop and maybe(?) left field, while continual growth of the bat and an isolation of positional development -- whether second or third -- can create a multi-year regular at peak; or in short, big-league value for an extended time.
