The USC women’s basketball team delivered a defining road performance, knocking off previously undefeated No. 20 Nebraska in a gritty, hard-fought victory that showcased the Lady Trojans’ depth, toughness, and ability to respond under pressure. Ranked No. 17, USC entered hostile territory and left with a statement win that could resonate well beyond the non conference slate.
After facing adversity early, USC showed poise and resilience, responding with physical defense, balanced scoring, and timely execution. The Trojans’ scoring leaders rose to the occasion, but it was the collective effort that ultimately powered the win.
Freshman standout Jazzy Davidson continued her impressive rise, finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Davidson’s presence on both ends of the floor was felt throughout the night, as she protected the rim, attacked the glass, and delivered offensively in key moments. Her ability to impact the game without forcing shots reflected the maturity of a player growing quickly within USC’s system.
Kennedy Smith led the way offensively with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists, stuffing the stat sheet while setting the tone with her physicality and court awareness. Smith’s versatility allowed USC to maintain balance, whether she was pushing the tempo, creating for teammates, or finishing strong at the rim.
Kara Dunn added 14 points and 5 rebounds, providing steady scoring and energy, while Londynn Jones contributed 13 points and 3 steals, igniting the Trojans with her defensive pressure and transition play. USC’s ability to get production across the lineup proved critical in breaking down a disciplined Nebraska squad that entered the game unbeaten.
While the box score highlighted USC’s offensive output, the defensive effort told the deeper story. Malia Samuels’ impact won’t fully show up in the stat sheet, but her defensive presence was vital. Samuels consistently disrupted Nebraska’s offensive rhythm, applying pressure, contesting shots, and forcing tough decisions that helped USC maintain control during key stretches.
USC’s frontcourt rotation also played a pivotal role. With limited experience, Laura Williams, Vivian Iwuchukwu, and Gerda Raulusaityte stepped up defensively, rotating effectively and holding their own against Nebraska’s size. Their ability to protect the paint, and rebound collectively, was a testament to both their growth and the coaching staff’s trust.
Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb deserves credit for navigating the rotations and putting her players in positions to succeed. Her adjustments throughout the game allowed USC to respond to Nebraska’s runs while maintaining composure in a challenging road environment.
“Big team arena. Big team atmosphere. Awesome fans. A great top-20 battle. This is what the Big Ten is going to be every night. Credit to Nebraska… super proud of our team for battling back, finding our offense…big road, we’ll take it and head back to LA,” Gottlieb said following the win.
The victory not only marked a resume-building road win, but also served as a glimpse into USC’s readiness for the grind of Big Ten play. The physicality, depth, and mental toughness required to win games like this will be demanded every night in conference competition.
With momentum on their side, the Lady Trojans now head back to Los Angeles to prepare for a highly anticipated Big Ten matchup against rival UCLA. If this performance against Nebraska was any indication, USC is proving it has both the resilience and firepower to compete at
the highest level.
