Herbert, Hampton expected to play Monday night against Eagles

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers are gearing up for a highly anticipated Monday Night Football clash with the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles at SoFi Stadium, and they’ll be getting a significant boost.

Despite recent injury concerns, both quarterback Justin Herbert and rookie running back Omarion Hampton will be suiting up for the Chargers, giving the team added firepower as they aim to extend their recent strong stretch of play.

Herbert Expected to Start Despite Surgery on Left Hand

Days after undergoing surgery on his left hand, Herbert is expected to take the field as the Chargers’ starting quarterback when they face the Eagles in prime time. Herbert, who fractured his hand last Sunday during the team's victory over the Raiders, had surgery on Monday to repair the injury. By Wednesday, he was back on the practice field—limited, but present and preparing for the upcoming matchup.

Herbert’s participation in practice this week has been encouraging, as he’s steadily progressed each day. Though he’s been limited in both Thursday and Friday’s practices, Herbert didn’t show any significant issues catching the snap or aligning under center. Despite wearing a protective glove on his non-throwing hand, Herbert has continued to practice at a high level, including 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills. 

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that Herbert has felt "better every day" and has approached the week as if he’s starting, a sentiment echoed by the QB himself.

"I’m doing everything I can to be ready for Monday night,” Herbert said.

The Chargers have been confident all week that Herbert would be able to play, and while the surgery raised initial questions, it’s clear that Herbert’s toughness and ability to work through adversity are on full display. As of now, there’s no indication that the injury will keep him from starting. Rookie Running Back Omarion Hampton Set to Return

Hampton was off to an impressive start before his injury, racking up 450 total yards and three touchdowns on an average of 4.8 yards per carry. His return, combined with the recent strong play of Kimani Vidal, could provide a dual threat in the Chargers' rushing attack. Vidal has been the focal point of the Chargers' ground game during Hampton’s absence, and now with the two of them back together, the duo is ready to take over.

"Me and him are gonna be special," Hampton said of his running back partnership. 

With Hampton back in the fold, the Chargers’ offense becomes even more dynamic. The running game has already shown flashes of explosiveness, and adding a healthy Hampton to the mix could provide a much-needed balance to what has been an electric passing attack led by Herbert.
