INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts rolled to a 40-6 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, delivering one of their most complete performances of the season behind three touchdowns from running back Jonathan Taylor and a suffocating defensive effort.
Daniel Jones threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns while completing 20 of 29 passes without a turnover, helping the Colts improve to 4-1 and remain unbeaten at home. Indianapolis jumped out to a 20-3 halftime lead and never looked back, controlling the game on both sides of the ball at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Taylor powered the Colts’ offense, scoring three times on the ground and adding a two-point conversion. He consistently found holes behind an offensive line that dominated the line of scrimmage. “I think the guys are playing at a high level right now, they’re playing together,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said. “Jonathan is the best back in the league right now. Credit to him, credit to the O-line.”
The Colts’ defense set the tone early, pressuring Raiders quarterback Geno Smith throughout the game and forcing two interceptions. Indianapolis limited Las Vegas to just six points, both coming on Daniel Carlson field goals. The Raiders never reached the end zone, struggling to sustain drives and going just 3 of 13 on third downs.
Smith completed 25 of 36 passes for 228 yards but was sacked three times and rarely found rhythm against the Colts’ front seven. After the game, Smith took accountability for the team’s struggles. “It’s the reality of it. We’ve got to fix it. We’ve got to get better,” he said. “If it ain’t looking right, it’s on me.”
The Raiders entered the game shorthanded, missing several key players including tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, and suffered more misfortune when punter A.J. Cole was injured after a blocked punt in the second quarter. That play set up a short field and led to one of Taylor’s touchdowns, breaking the game open.
Las Vegas coach Pete Carroll said his team simply couldn’t execute. “It’s on all of us,” Carroll said. “I told them I’m going to keep believing and I hope that you guys will do the same thing until we get this thing right.”
Rookie running back Ashton Jeanty provided one of the few bright spots for the Raiders, finishing with 109 total yards from scrimmage. Still, it was a frustrating afternoon for a team now sitting at 1-4.
The Colts, meanwhile, continued to look like one of the AFC’s most balanced teams, mixing an efficient passing attack with a relentless ground game. With Taylor healthy and the defense clicking, Indianapolis heads into the second month of the season as a legitimate contender in the conference.
