“To the young girls and boys in the stadium, this wasn't a possibility for seven-year-old Alex,” Alex Morgan said during her jersey retirement ceremony speech in front of the fans at Snapdragon Stadium.
“Seven-year-old Alex had a dream of playing soccer, but not in my wildest dreams could I’ve imagined standing up here seeing my number get retired,” she said.
“Because it just wasn't possible, and now it is.”

Morgan played that final match on Sept. 8, 2024, at Snapdragon Stadium against the North Carolina Courage, where Morgan was met with a standing and roaring applause by the fans in San Diego, as she left the field for the final time in her career with her number glowing on the substitution board.
A moment that not only celebrated her impact for the Wave and USWNT, but the impact she made for women’s sports and soccer around the globe.
Morgan helped the Wave lift its first-ever trophy back in 2023, winning the NWSL Shield for that season. She then helped add a second to the club trophy cabinet with a 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup goal and win over Gotham FC.
She finished her Wave playing career as the club's all-time scoring and assist leader with 28 goals and 11 assists. Totals of 60 goals in the NWSL during her time with the Wave, Portland Thorns and Orlando Pride.
Her time with the stars and stripes was where her stardom sparked, helping the USWNT win back-to-back FIFA Women’s World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019.
During her time with the national team, she ended with 223 caps as she netted 123 goals, leaving her fifth all-time on the USWNT scoring leaders list.
As for her lengthy personal accolades list, some notable individual on-field accomplishments include a NWSL Golden Boot in 2022, six FIFPro Women’s World XI selections and four CONCACAF Player of the Year honors.

It only took Morgan eight months to return to the Wave, joining as a minority investor back in May of 2025.
After joining the ownership group, Morgan’s message to the fans was all about progress and community.
“I am watching this incredible team do so many incredible things, and I'm going to do everything in my power to advocate for this team, to uplift this team and organization,” said Alex Morgan
“To continue to make deep roots in this community on behalf of the organization,” she said.
#13 now hangs proudly at Snapdragon Stadium, not only as a reminder of Morgan's legendary career and accomplishments, but also as a testament to the continuous impact she will have on women's sports and representation.
