SAN DIEGO -- Western Conference heavyweight battle at Snapdragon Stadium capped off in 1-1 stalemate, with San Diego FC's Ian Pilcher's late equalizing strike leaving the Chrome and Azul atop the West standings.

Game two of their six-match homestand at Snapdragon Stadium saw San Diego FC back in front of their home fans on Saturday night for their battle for first place in the West against the second-place Vancouver Whitecaps.

Western Conference leaders, San Diego FC, held a single-point lead in front of the trailing and visiting Vancouver Whitecaps, with the winner of the Saturday night showdown to hold the leading position, as a draw wouldn’t be enough to move San Diego FC from that top spot.

After dropping points in their midweek Wednesday night 1-0 shutout loss at Snapdragon Stadium to the hands of Toronto FC, San Diego FC came into the weekend fixture looking to maintain in the West race and snap their consecutive home match losing streak.

The Vancouver Whitecaps were coming off an offensively commanding victory from their midweek MLS matchday, as they visited the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Wednesday and left with a 3-0 win and the three points, cutting into San Diego’s single-point advantage.

The homeside looked to get the season tiebreaker over the Whitecaps, with this being the reverse fixture, as their first and previous meeting saw San Diego FC travel up North to Vancouver, Canada, on June 25 and escape BC Place Stadium with a 5-3 statement victory over the then conference leaders.

To start the match, the Whitecaps' pressing within the opening minutes saw them have multiple threatening opportunities to get on the board early, but San Diego were able to avoid conceding early into the first half as they settled into the game.

San Diego FC got their first sniff in front of goal in the 24-minute, with forward Anders Dreyer getting his squad's first shot and shot on target, as Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka did a great job of getting low to push the attempt away.

The chances continued for San Diego, with midfielder Luca de la Torre letting an outside-the-box rising shot rip, with the ball rising right over the bar and into the supporter section in the 27-minute.

Into the closing minutes of the first half, San Diego FC goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega was called on to make multiple goal-stopping saves to keep Vancouver off the scoresheet.

Making a diving two-handed save in the 37-minute, pushing Whitecaps defender Édier Ocampo’s outside-the-box strike, which was headed into the net, out for a corner.

Only three minutes after, he was forced to make another goal save, this time an inside the box attempt that remained near the goal area following the save, as Whitecaps defender Mathias Laborda's tapping touch deflected off San Diego’s Manu Duah and into the net.

The opening goal of the match was deemed an own goal for Duah in the 40-minute, as the Whitecaps took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

After failing to get on the scoresheet in the first 45 minutes, San Diego FC grew their scoreless streak to four halves without finding the back of the net.

In the second half, San Diego FC faced familiar controversial officiating, as after being given a foul right outside the box in the 59-minute, the play went through Video Review for a possible penalty upgrade but ended with the call being reversed to a San Diego FC foul.

Whitecaps forward Brian White got the chance to double up Vancouver’s advantage on the night and seal the match with only 15 minutes left to play. But as he rounded San Diego’s Pablo Sisniega inside the penalty box in the 76-minute, he was unable to get his rolling shot attempt on goal as it went out for a goal kick and the match stood in grabbing distance for the homeside.

The search for the equalizing goal ended nearing the 80-minute mark, with San Diego FC defender Ian Pilcher finding the net for the 1-1 leveler, recording his first career MLS goal.

Coming off a centered corner kick, the ball was momentarily cleared with Luca Bombino gaining possession at the top of the box, looking to get a shot.

A Bombino scuffed attempt rolled perfectly for Pilcher inside the penalty box, as he fired a first-time left-footed drive into the left side of the net, with Whitecaps' Yohei Takaoka left blinded with the box full of bodies, leaving him no chance on a save.

Pilcher’s 79-minute goal ended San Diego FC’s four-half goal drought.

"It fell to my feet, out of luck," San Diego FC defender Ian Pilcher said on his game-tying goal against the Whitecaps. "After that, it was a bit of a blur, but super nice to do it with this club, and just so happy to be in the moment with everyone there.”

In the ninth minute of added injury time, Pablo Sisniega stepped up once again for a final goal-saving play, saving the match and point for San Diego FC as the game's final whistle blew at 1-1.

"These last three games have been special for me," San Diego FC goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega said after the match on his recent starting role. "I've been working very hard for these last six months. So, to get a chance to show you guys the work that I've been putting in is obviously important for me."

The 1-1 Saturday night draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps snaps San Diego’s home losing streak, instead moving to a three-match winless streak at Snapdragon Stadium.

San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas spoke at the post-match press conference on the mentality of his young backline against Vancouver and makeshift defender Manu Duah’s progression.

“It shows that we're a club that believes in young players. Believes in next player up mentality, no excuses. Believes in our environment of a growth mindset environment, a development environment.”

“Manu (Duah) is a great example. He's been training and training and training and not playing, but he's had a growth mindset, and the coaches have done such a great job working with him, collectively, individually, to get him ready.”

“So, what I think it shows is that these guys are competitors, and they got quality, and that they took a huge step in their maturity and their games today.”

A point for the two clubs sees San Diego FC retain their single-point lead at the top of the Western Conference, as their record moves to thirteen wins, seven losses, and four draws, totaling to 43 points on the season, although the Whitecaps still hold a league match in hand that can see them move into that conference leading position.

Returning for their third straight match at Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego FC will host Nashville SC on MLS Friday Night Soccer on July 25, kicking off at 7:30 p.m.

A first-time meeting between the two clubs, as San Diego FC tests its quality against the second-place side from the Eastern Conference.
