Week One of the Esports World Cup saw four action packed events reach their conclusion. In Rennsport Racing, BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing took the crown while GO1 emerged victorious in the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves event. Additionally, Team Heretics rose above the field to take the Esports World Cup’s Valorant Title, and VK Gaming took down the competition to lay claim to the best Apex Legends team on the Esports World Cup Stage.
Rennsport Racing
In the Group Stage, BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing started off strong, winning the first match. However, in the middle portion of the stage, they would put up an average performance, only placing in the top three in one of the next four matches, with a last place finish and two second to last place finishes mixed in. Then, in matches six and seven, they recaptured their first game spark and ripped off two straight wins, putting themselves in a great spot heading into the final match of the Group Stage. Despite placing fourth in the last game of the series, BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing still placed first in the Group Stage, which allowed them to advance to the upper division for the Payoff Stage.
In the Playoff Stage, BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing continued the dominance they showed in the first and last portions of the group stage. In three matches played, BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing won the first and third games with a second place finish sandwiched in between them. Their display of dominance would land them in the Grand Final, where BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing would face off against Virtus.pro and Team Vitality.
Early in the Grand Final, it looked like the race for first would be hotly contested, with BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing taking the first game and Virtus.pro capturing victory in the second. However, BMW M Team Redline Red Bull Sim Racing would then separate themselves from the pact by winning the next four matches and winning five out of the final six to snatch the crown as the best sim racing team on the World Cup Stage.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves
GO1 began the Group Stage in a heated battle against Nemo. After falling down two to one in his inaugural match, GO1 fought back, winning three straight to advance to the next round of the Group Stage. In the winners' match, GO1 faced Kindevu, where, after splitting the first two games of the series, he finished strong with back to back victories to move onto the Playoff Stage.
In the First Round of the Playoff Stage, GO1 started off flaming hot, jumping out to a three to zero lead over ET. GO1 would then win two of the next three to advance to the semi finals where he faced MOK. The start of the round was even, with the competitors splitting the first two games; then GO1 took over, winning the next four matches to advance to the Grand Final to play Xiaohai. In this tournament, Xiaohai had the opposite experience as GO1. The group stage proved to be of little problem for Xiaohai, but as the tournament wore on, he struggled some with his last two opponents. That said, Xiaohai came out of the gates strong, winning the first two matches of the Grand Final and pushing GO1 against the ropes. With the pressure on, GO1 responded by evening the series with to straight victories to tie the series at 2 apiece. But yet again, Xiaohai pulled ahead in the crucial game five. Yet, with just two games from victory, Xiaohai would not be able to capture another game as GO1 took control of the Grand Final, winning three straight to capture the Esports World Cup Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves title.
Valorant
Team Heretics had a rough start to the tournament. In their initial match vs NRG, Team Heretics not only lost, but got beaten handily in a 13 to 4 NRG victory. This led them to a best of 3 series match with Titan Esports to decide who would be eliminated. In the first game in that series, Team Heretics fell to Titan Esports in a close 13 to 10 match. In the second game, Titan Esports pushed the eventual champs to overtime, barely losing 14 to 12. Yet, this is where the tide seemed to change for Team Heretics as they would win the deciding game of the series relatively comfortably, 13 to 6. This improved play carried over in Team Heretics' match against Rex Regum Qeon, winning the first game in dominant fashion 13 to 3. Then, despite Rex Regum Qeon putting up a better fight in the second game of the series, Team Heretics still found a path to victory in overtime 15 to 13 to advance to the Playoff Stage.
In the Playoff Stage, Team Heretics used the momentum from the Rex Regum Qeon match to handle BBL Esports easily, winning both games by eight rounds or more. In the Simi Finals, Team Heretics would continue their hot streak by beating Gen.G Esports 13 to 7. However, Gen.G Esports would punch back in a 13 to 8 victory. In the final game, both teams gave it all they had with the match going into overtime. Yet, after a heavily extended game, Team Heretics emerged victorious in a 16 to 14 deciding match to go to the Grand Final. Waiting for Team Heretics in the Finals was Fnatic, a team who had only lost one game the entire tournament. And for the first two matches, it looked like Team Heretics was outmatched, losing 13 to 4 and 13 to 1. But when Team Heretics' backs are against the wall is when they do their best. They thrived under that pressure the entire tournament, and in the Grand Final, it was no different. Team Heretics was able to push Fnatics the length of the series, winning the next two games 13 to 10 and 13 to 11. Then, with one game separating themselves from Esports World Cup glory, Team Heretics seized their opportunity to win the 2025 Esports World Cup Valorant Trophy in another 13 to 11 victory.
Apex Legends
In the Group Stage of the tournament, VK Gaming came out of the gates guns blazing. After a ninth-place finish in the first game, they followed it up with second and first-place finishes in the next two games to claim an early spot at the top of the leaderboard. However, in the next three matches, VK Gaming wouldn’t be able to find themselves in an end game, failing to place inside the top 10. In the final four matches, VK Gaming picked it up some, placing top 5 twice and just outside of it once, which was just enough for them to finish just outside the top 5 at sixth overall for the group stage.
In the Finals, VK Gaming started off hot once again, coming out on top in the first match and placing inside the top ten in the subsequent two matches. Yet in the next four matches, VK Gaming seemed to cool off, only placing inside the top ten one time. Then, in game eight VK surged, almost winning the tournament; however, they fell just short, placing second behind Gen.G Esports. VK Gaming was able to use this and carry it over into game 9 and get the win, emerging victorious in the Esports World Series s Apex Legends Tournament.
These four amazing events are just the beginning of the eight week extravaganza that is the 2025 Esports World Cup. As of now, there is a five way tie for first place with every event winner thus far claiming a spot, as well as Gen.G esports, which has placed high enough in these formative events to overcome a lack of a first place finish.
