Brewers secure series sweep of Dodgers in Tyler Glasnow's return

MILWAUKEE -- In a tightly played ball game throughout, it was the Brewers who hung on in extras and secured the sweep with a walk-off win that handed Los Angeles their sixth consecutive loss by a final score of 3-2. 

For the Dodgers, this game was highlighted by the return of Tyler Glasnow, who was pitching for the first time since April 27. He had a solid showcase in the loss, tossing five solid innings, only allowing one earned run on two hits, three walks, and punching out five Brewers on 85 pitches. 

The Dodgers made some moves in the midst of activating Glasnow off the injured list, as Los Angeles optioned Alexis Díaz back to Triple-A one day after being called up and has placed Michael Kopech on the 60-day injured list. Kopech was originally placed on the 15-day injured list back on July 1, retroactive to June 28, due to right knee inflammation. 

The Dodgers and Dave Roberts himself had originally minimized the severity of Kopech's knee inflammation. Still, with the new status of the 29-year-old flamethrower, we could see Kopech return to the team by August or September. 

Brewers starter Jose Quintana had Los Angeles hitters hitless through the first five innings until Esteury Ruiz smacked a single to center with two outs. Ruiz would swipe second, and James Outman would walk the bases loaded as Shohei Ohtani came up to the plate, and he too earned a walk that put the Dodgers on the board 1-0. 

Jake Bauers would lead off the Brewers' bottom half of the fifth with a walk, and with Sal Frelick up to the plate, Glasnow flinched just enough to earn a balk, putting Bauers in scoring position. Bauers tested his luck against Will Smith's arm as he attempted to swipe third and was successful as Smith committed a throwing error, allowing Bauers to score and tie the game. 

Mookie Betts would hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead that was safe until the Brewers' half of the ninth. 

Tanner Scott was handed the responsibility to close out the Brewers to secure the win, but was unsuccessful as Isaac Collins and Caleb Durbin hit some base knocks off of Scott. With runners on first and second, pinch hitter Andrew Vaughn hit a go-ahead RBI single that tied the game 2-2, heading into extras. 

Trevor Megill was tasked with facing Freddie Freeman, Andy Pages, and Tommy Edman in the tenth and was successful as he struck out the side. That gave the Brewers all the momentum they needed, as Jackson Chourio would hit the walk-off single that handed the Dodgers their sixth consectuive loss and secured the sweep for Milwaukee. 

This loss marks the Dodgers' longest losing streak since April 8-13 during the 2019 season. Los Angeles has a much-needed off day tomorrow as they head to San Francisco to play the Giants for a three-game weekend series before the All-Star break commences.
