LAS VEGAS -- A'ja Wilson scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Aces to an 85-59 annihilation of the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night.
Wilson was one of four Aces to score in double figures, as she also reached another milestone, became the quickest player in league history to score 5,000 points.
Jackie Young had with 20 points and eight rebounds while Chelsea Gray finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Jewell Loyd has 13 points and seven rebounds.
All five of Las Vegas' starters had at least six rebounds.
Tina Charles led the way for the Sun with 18 points, while Olivia Nelson-Ododa scored 12 and Saniya Rivers chipped in with 10.
Here is a quarter-by-quarter breakdown:
First quarter
The Aces hit four of their first seven shots, including three of four from 3-point range, and opened the game on a 19-0 run. Loyd led Las Vegas in the opening stanza, going 3 for 3 from the floor, including 2 of 2 from deep. The Aces ended up shooting just 8 of 22 from the field, after slowing down late in the period.
Connecticut wouldn't score its first points until the 1:58 mark, making it 19-2. The Sun had their own shooting woes, going 3 of 16 (18.8%) from the floor.
The Aces, who outrebounded the Sun 16-8, led 21-6 after one.
Second quarter
The Sun opened the quarter on a 11-6 spurt to cut Las Vegas' lead to 27-17. The Aces would answer with a 5-0 run to go back up 15 with 4:04 left, when Wilson became the fastest player to reach the 5,000-point plateau with a shot from the left side of the key to give her eight points in the game and 5,001 in her career.
"It meant a lot to me," Wilson said. "It's been a special, special season for us. It's been a lot of ups and downs, but when you can hit a milestone like this in a league like this, I can't let it go unnoticed. So I'm grateful, I'm blessed. I'm so happy I got to do it in my Princess Tiana (shoes). 'Princess and the Frog' is my favorite movie, so I got a chance to do it in these shoes. It's my first time ever writing some little shoes. I'm definitely gonna cherish this moment, because it's been a lot of fun. But obviously we got a lot of work to do, so back at it tomorrow."
The Aces hit 42.1% in the quarter, draining 8 of 19 from the floor, while they held the Sun to 6 of 16 (37.5%) shooting.
For the half, Las Vegas outscored the Sun in the paint, 16-10, and with second-chance points, 11-6.
The Aces took a 40-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Third quarter
The Sun scored the first seven points to open the second half, cutting Las Vegas' lead to 40-36, but the Aces would promptly respond behind the hot hand of Wilson and Jackie Young.
Wilson scored 12 points while Young added 8, as the Aces outscored the Sun 28-17 in the third to build a 22-point lead, at 68-46.
The Aces ended up blistering the net for a scorching 60% from the floor, hitting 9 of 15, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. They also dominated the boards with a 10-4 rebounding edge, limiting Connecticut to just one offensive board.
Though the Sun hit a commendable 44.4% (8 of 18) in the third, they couldn't find their groove from long range, burying just 1 of 5 from 3-point range.
Fourth quarter
With the game in hand, coach Becky Hammon eventually turned to her reserves, who held it down and helped the Aces cruise to a 17-13 edge in the final period.
Kierstan Bell came off the bench to finish the game with eight points, carrying momentum from scoring five in the third with another three in the fourth quarter.
"They were good in the second half," Hammon said of her reserves. "We didn't lose any momentum ... and that's really what you know you want from your bench, is that when you put that bench in, it either maintains or it goes up a little bit or a lot. But you don't want it to go down, drastically. And I thought they were, as a group, just a lot better in that second half, a lot more focused and came in and really impacted the game in a positive way."
