Angel City lost on the road against the NWSL powerhouse, the Kansas City Current, 1-nil on Friday night.

The night started slow. Neither side seemed to capitalize on opportunities to score. However, the Los Angeles side's backline wore down many of Kansas's attacks.

Angel City's best chance came in the 56th minute when the team was awarded a penalty kick. Alyssa Thompson took a shot, sending the ball flying towards the upper right corner. Kansas goalkeeper Lorena leapt to tip the ball into the crossbar before it bobbed out for a corner kick. It was Lorena's first penalty save and Thompson's failed conversion in the NWSL.

In the 69th minute, Kansas City broke the stalemate with a goal by Bia Zaneratto. Following a fast break, Zaneratto sent a left-footed shot from the centre of the box to the high centre of the goal.

"I don't think any team has come out here and given them this many problems. We need to execute our moments- we missed a penalty, we made a mistake giving the ball away," said head coach Alexander Straus, discussing the team's shortfalls throughout the match.

Angel City trailed throughout the night in terms of goal opportunities, only creating two shots on target compared to Kansas' seven. However, ACFC outpossessed 54% compared to the home side's 46% and had a pass accuracy of 76%, three percent higher than Kansas.

"But, you don't come here to create 400 chances to win in Kansas City. I'm really, really proud of our team today. It's by far one of our best performances of this year. We break now, recharge, and we will be a very difficult opponent for a lot of teams in the second part of the season," said Straus.

Despite the result, Friday's match was the first time in 2025 that the first-place Current scored fewer than two goals at home.

The loss marks a sixth consecutive win for Kansas City, which remains number one in league standings. The Current (11-2-0) has won all six games at home this season. Angel City (5-5-3) is winless in its last five games, and has secured one tie and two losses since Straus assumed the role of head coach three weeks ago. The team now sits 11th on the league table.
