With the final spot in the FIFA Club World Cup on the line, LAFC fought back to take down Club América, 2-1, at BMO Stadium on Saturday night in extra time.

An 89th-minute equalizer from Igor Jesus and a 115th-minute, go-ahead rocket from Denis Bouanga told the story for Los Angeles in a resilient effort. LAFC will stand alongside CR Flamengo, ES Tunis and Chelsea FC in Group D when FIFA Club World Cup group stage play begins on June 14.

In a tense start to the contest for both sides, neither could get close enough to manufacture a shot attempt through the opening minutes. Bouanga finally took the first shot of the match just over 17 minutes in as he fired one from outside the box that sailed over the net.

Just a minute later, Club América defender Sebastián Cáceres took down Mark Delgado on a slide tackle, leaving Delago lying on the pitch for a couple of minutes as he clutched at his ankle. He was able to get up under his own power and remained in the game as Cáceres was shown a yellow card. Denis Bouanga could not convert on the ensuing free kick as the squads remained scoreless.

LAFC continued to apply pressure throughout the first half despite trailing in the overall possession battle. While they had the ball just 42.4% of the time, the black and gold outshot Club América 4-2 and took four corner kicks throughout the opening 45 minutes.

In the 59th minute, with action back underway, Delgado attempted to make a play on the ball against Club América midfielder Érick Sánchez as he fired a shot from the edge of the box. Making contact with the leg of Sánchez in the process, he was initially awarded a free kick. However, VAR confirmed that he was inside the box, awarding a penalty shot as Delgado was tagged with a yellow card.

Sánchez managed to drill the penalty past Hugo Lloris in the 64th minute, breaking the tie and putting Club América on top 1-0. Delgado's yellow card was the second in three minutes for LAFC, as Igor Jesus earned one just moments earlier in the 59th minute. Sergi Palencia was given the squad's third yellow card of the night in the 66th minute (they would finish the night with five total).

Looking to battle back, LAFC had a pair of chances near the 80th minute. Ryan Hollingshead fired a shot on goal from outside the box that Club América goalkeeper Luis Malagón was able to dive on and smother the attempt. In a corner kick just two minutes later, Olivier Giroud's header could not get through as Los Angeles continued to hunt for the equalizer.

Continuing to battle, Jesus ultimately delivered the clutch moment in front of the home crowd, drilling a header through the back of the net as LAFC cashed in on Bouanga's corner kick. It was the first LAFC goal for the 22-year-old and perhaps the most crucial for the black and gold in a long time.

Seven minutes of stoppage time were awarded, and Bouanga nearly secured the go-ahead goal as he maneuvered his way through traffic and into the center of the box, where his shot was deflected. The 1-1 thriller headed to extra time.

When it mattered most, Bouanga showed why he is the leading scorer on the Los Angeles roster, breaking through with the clutch go-ahead moment to make it 2-1 in the 115th minute. The 30-year-old scorched one towards the net, getting help from a deflection to ice the match and send LAFC onwards.

Bouanga now has eight goals across his last nine matches overall, but none have come bigger than on Saturday night.

LAFC will return to MLS action on Sunday, June 8, as they host Sporting Kansas City. The last time the two sides played, Los Angeles earned a 2-0 shutout victory. Kansas City is currently 4-4-8 and 12th place in the Western Conference.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT.
