HARRISON, N.J. -- The San Diego Wave defeated Gotham FC, 1-0, on Friday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium to extend their winning strake to five games.
Jonas Eidevall made two changes to the lineup as Adriana Leon replaced Maria Sanchez. Kennedy Wesley received a red card in the last game against Portland and was replaced by Kristen McNabb.
San Diego was the better team in the opening 45 minutes, controlling 61-percent possession. The Wave made the most of their clearest scoring opportunity in the first half. Kimmi Ascanio scored from a shot from inside of the box.
The scoring play was well crafted as Perle Morroni provided the assist for Ascanio. The 17-year-old scored her first professional goal against Chicago earlier in the season and now has three goals and an assist in this campaign.
The first substitution for Jonas Eidevall came in the 62nd minute when Kyra Carusa came on for Adriana Leon.
The second half decreased in intensity as there was not much offensive production for either team. San Diego continued to control possession heavily with 60-percent.
The last couple of changes for Eidevall came towards the final whistle. Melanie Barcenas and Makenzy Doniak replaced Kimmi Ascanio and Gia Corley.
The Wave were the better team in the second half and did not struggle to keep the lead. The whole backline put in a very solid effort, especially Trinity Armstrong and Hanna Lundkvist. Armstrong had three clearances, two tackles, a blocked shot and an interception in the match.
San Diego are now on a massive five-game undefeated streak after this 1-0 win against Gotham. This includes four victories in this stretch with 11 goals scored and just two conceded.
At the time of writing, San Diego is second in the NWSL with 17 points. The Wave now have two consecutive home games against North Carolina and Seattle Reign.
