LAS VEGAS -- The Vegas Golden Knights ended the month of January with a 2- 1 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.
Tomas Hertl extended his point streak to 11 games with a goal (nine goals, six assists). Ilya Samsonov made 22 saves for the Golden Knights (31-15-6).
“We’ll look back and realize we did get points. It was a 500-month. That’s not what we’re aiming for, but I’ve said this many times: if that turns out to be your worst month, you’re going to be in good shape,” Vegas Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We have three more to go. So, ask me again in April.”
How The Goals Were Scored
Hertl scored at 4:58 of the first period, beating Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlinkins through the short side.
Then the Blue Jackets tied it at 18:34 when the Golden Knights failed to clear the puck out of the crease, allowing Adam Fantilli to sneak it past Samsonov.
After 40 minutes of scoreless hockey, a costly turnover 52 seconds into the overtime period allowed Cole Sillinger to score into an empty net to end the game 2-1.
Up Next
The Golden Knights travel to the East Coast for a four-game road swing before the two-week break for the 4 Nations Face-Off.
“We just got to find a way to push through here,” Golden Knights defenseman Noah Hanifin said. “We have a big road trip and four more games left before this break. We can reset and get back to the way we were earlier. We just got to take these few days, and regroup a bit. We’re playing a couple of teams that beat us last time we played them, so we got to be ready to go.”
